Day one of Wimbledon is finally here for 2024, so The Tennis Gazette gives you the full first-day schedule, how to watch and the key information as the championships begin.
One big storyline already developed before Grand Slam tennis returned to SW19 after Rafael Nadal confirmed he will not play at Wimbledon. The two-time champion on the grass courts opted to skip the championship this year to focus on his fitness to play at the Paris Olympics.
Fitness doubts even followed Novak Djokovic ahead of the tournament after the seven-time Wimbledon winner underwent knee surgery. The Serbian receiving the No2 seed could even set up a semi-final against the reigning Wimbledon champion, Carlos Alcaraz, this summer.
The women’s championship also sees Emma Raducanu return to Wimbledon after missing it last year due to injury. She will be unseeded in 2024 and may headline the British hopes this July alongside Jack Draper, while American hopes may rest with Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz.

Day one of Wimbledon on July 1 also sees the 2024 championship start with a bang Alcaraz starts his defence of the men’s title. Top men’s seed Jannik Sinner will also be taking to court on day one in SW19. While Raducanu and Gauff headline the women’s Wimbledon matches.

Key storylines to follow on day one of Wimbledon 2024
One of the key storylines to follow on day one of the 2024 Wimbledon men’s championship is certain to be Alcaraz starting his defence of the title on Centre Court against Mark Lajal. It is even the first time that the No3 seed Spaniard and the Estonian have ever met each other.

Daniil Medvedev is also in action on day one at Wimbledon in 2024 as the No5 seed Russian faces American, Aleksandar Kovacevic, on Court One. Medvedev reached the semi-final last year for his personal-best performance at Wimbledon before losing 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to Alcaraz.
Sinner also bowed out of the 2023 edition of Wimbledon in straight sets in the semis against Djokovic, who begins his 2024 campaign on day two. The Italian will now hope to show why he is the No1 seed in 2024 on the opening day in SW19 against German, Yannick Hanfmann.
As for the women’s championship, how Raducanu copes on her return to Wimbledon at the Briton’s home event against No22 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova will be a key talking point on Monday. Gauff will also take to Centre Court on Monday as she takes on Caroline Dolehide.
Court One, meanwhile, will see No3 seed – and a potential women’s 2024 champion – Aryna Sabalenka start her Wimbledon campaign against Emina Bektas. The Belarusian is bound to be a contender to secure the title, so will strive to avoid any banana skins in the first round.
