Iga Swiatek was far from her best in round two of the US Open, struggling against Suzan Lamens.
The Polish star was dominant in the first round, as Swiatek defeated Emiliana Arango in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Most fans predicted Swiatek to produce a similarly convincing display in the second round, but it wasn’t to be.
Leading by a set to love, her game fell apart against Lamens, allowing the Dutch star to level things up, 1-6, 6-4.

Eventually, Swiatek recovered, beating Lamens in three sets, to secure her spot in the third round.
In the aftermath of the world number two’s shaky second-round win, Marion Bartoli said what she expected coach Wim Fissette to do next.
Marion Bartoli expected Wim Fissette to call up and book Iga Swiatek a practice court after latest win
Speaking to Sky Sports, Bartoli shared what she believed Fissette may have done right after Swiatek’s second-round match.
“I will not be surprised if Wim Fissette is already on the call with the practice courts to book herself a practice this afternoon,” she said.
“That forehand just went off the rail completely mid-way through that match.
“I think Iga Swiatek has done extremely well to not show much frustration and keep on trying. That’s all you can do on a day where you feel off like that is to try to find the rhythm back.

“All credit to Suzan Lamens as well, after being down 6-1, 2-1, to keep hanging in there, trying to find solutions, showing some great tennis at times, and putting every effort she could into making this a really competitive match.”
Bartoli proceeded to comment on some of the statistics from Swiatek’s win, which she was surprised by.
“26 winners but 29 unforced errors, that’s a lot for the standards of Iga [Swiatek],” she said.

Swiatek will need to cut down those unforced errors if she is to continue her march towards a second US Open title in 2025.
Next up for the Pole is the 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya, who beat Swiatek at the Dubai Tennis Championships last year.
- 2025 Cincinnati Open QF – Iga Swiatek defeated Anna Kalinskaya, 6-3, 6-4
- 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships SF – Anna Kalinskaya defeated Iga Swiatek, 6-4, 6-4
Their third career meeting will commence on Saturday, August 30, as both players look to advance to the fourth round of the US Open.
Can Iga Swiatek win her seventh Grand Slam at the US Open?
Swiatek won her sixth Grand Slam title earlier this year at Wimbledon, further establishing herself as one of the greatest players in the women’s game today.
Only Venus Williams (7) has won more Grand Slam singles titles than Swiatek, among active players.

| 1 | Venus Williams | 7 | 2000-2008 |
| 2 | Iga Swiatek | 6 | 2020-2025 |
| 3 | Naomi Osaka | 4 | 2018-2021 |

She’ll need a title in New York to move level with Williams on seven, but does Swiatek really have a chance to win the US Open?
If you look at her previous performance… then no. But ignoring what may just have been a blip against Lamens, Swiatek has looked very much like a title contender over the past few months.

Winning titles at Wimbledon and in Cincinnati, Swiatek returned to number two in the world, and could regain her world number one ranking from Aryna Sabalenka should she emerge victorious at Flushing Meadows.
Top three in the ‘Live’ WTA Rankings
- 1. Aryna Sabalenka – 9,355 points
- 2. Coco Gauff – 7,764 points
- 3. Iga Swiatek – 7,633 points
After a slow start to her journey alongside Fissette, things seem to have finally clicked, and Swiatek has begun picking up wins as a result.
| Time period | Finals | Titles |
| November 2024 – May 2025 | 0 | 0 |
| June 2025 – August 2025 | 3 (Bad Homburg Open, Wimbledon, Cincinnati Open) | 2 (Wimbledon, Cincinnati Open) |
The question now is whether she can put her below-par second-round performance behind her and push on from here…
