The debate over who is the greatest tennis player of all time is one that will likely never subside, given the immense subjectivity that comes with each selection.

One fan might favour the grace of Roger Federer, whilst another will argue that Rafael Nadal’s hard work and grit in the face of such physical adversity lend to his case.

And then, Novak Djokovic emerges as a third candidate alongside fellow greats like Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

Ironically, it’s the latter of all of these superstars who weighed in on this age-old debate in 2021, delivering her unequivocal answer.

Chris Evert names the greatest male tennis player of all time

Speaking on FanSided’s Da Windy City podcast, nearly five years ago now, the American tennis legend was keen to separate the debate.

After all, she argued that it was unfair to compare the greatest female players of all time against the men, and so delivered two answers.

Would Rafael Nadal be the undisputed GOAT if not for injuries?

Her first saw her claim: “If you put all the best tennis players of all-time, I would say Serena.

“If you said the most accomplished career, I would say more Steffi (Graf) and Martina (Navratilova). They have better numbers. They have a better percentage of winning, they won more tournaments, they just won a couple of less grand slams, but they are better in all the other categories.”

However, on the men’s side, she chose Djokovic: “I think Novak (Djokovic), if he has another three or four years especially, I think he is going to have to be considered the greatest of all time. Mentally, physically, oh my gosh, and emotionally, he’s above them all, I think.

“Shot making, artistry: Roger Federer. Fitness and warrior fighter: Rafa Nadal, but Djokovic will win more tournaments and will win more grand slam tournaments and will have a better record.”

It’s amazing that the Serbian remains ever-present on the tour today, with Djokovic reiterating his desire to play at the 2028 LA Olympics recently too.

Novak Djokovic remains desperate to prove why he is the GOAT

When Djokovic won the Olympic gold medal in 2024, many thought he would retire soon after. After all, what was there left for him to accomplish?

This incredible feat saw the 38-year-old overcome Carlos Alcaraz on the clay of Philippe Chatrier, effectively completing his trophy cabinet.

Who finishes their career on more majors – Alcaraz or Djokovic?

And yet, he remains.

Djokovic has made no secret about his desire to win a record-shattering 25th Grand Slam title, which would certainly secure his status as the greatest player of all time.

It is likely his desperation for such an honour which fuels his continued presence on tour, even if he so often falls short at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
