There will be a new men’s singles Grand Slam champion at this year’s French Open.

Roland Garros 2026 has seen two huge upsets in the early stages of the men’s draw, with Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic exiting the tournament.

Sinner fell in the second round to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who came back from two sets down to defeat the Italian and end his pursuit of the Career Grand Slam.

In the third round, Djokovic lost to Joao Fonseca, who was also forced to come back from 2-0 down to advance.

With the draw blown wide open, there is now a very different atmosphere in the locker room, says 10th seed Flavio Cobolli.

Flavio Cobolli describes the atmosphere amongst players in Paris

As per Tennis 365, Cobolli said: “There’s a different atmosphere, especially since the two strongest players are no longer here, and now Novak isn’t either.

“When you walk through the locker room, you can tell that an opportunity has opened up for everyone, and everyone wants to take advantage of it.

“We’re all ready to fight for every point and try to get something important out of this tournament. I’m really happy with my performance, of course. It’s also my first win on Centre Court at a Grand Slam, so it means a lot for sure.

“Now it’s time to recover a bit, and I’m already thinking about the next match, which is really important for me.

“I think I also played well because perhaps my opponent was a little tired from the effort of the last few days, and that maybe helped me today to reach the next round.

“I want to take it match by match, that’s the way I want to think this week. I know there are many possibilities to have a new Grand Slam champion. But I don’t want to think about this. I have another tough match.”

Flavio Cobolli’s campaign at Roland Garros so far

Like everyone else in the draw, Cobolli has a golden opportunity to win his first major title, and the Italian has a real chance of doing it based on his run so far.

Cobolli has yet to drop a set en route to the fourth round, with wins over Andrea Pellegrino, Wu Yibing and Learner Tien.

Next, he will take on American star Zachary Svajda, whom he has played just once before on the ATP Tour; a three-set win at the Delray Beach Open in 2024.

Should he advance, Cobolli will take on either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Alejandro Tabilo in the quarterfinals.

Cobolli’s best result at a major is a quarterfinal finish, which he achieved at Wimbledon last year.
