Jannik Sinner’s exit from Roland Garros changed the course of the entire tournament.

Sinner crashed out of the French Open in the second round after losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in five sets.

The Italian had dominated the match, having been up two sets and 5-1 in the third, but he began to struggle physically, and the Argentine fought his way back into the contest to win 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 1-6, 1-6.

In his press conference following the defeat, Sinner said he was dizzy, but suggested the hot Parisian conditions were not a major factor in his struggles.

But Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, thinks the world number one didn’t want to reveal exactly what was wrong with him.

Patrick Mouratoglou reacts to Jannik Sinner’s comments

“Everybody got extremely surprised, understatement, by Jannik’s loss in Roland Garros,” said Mouratoglou in a post on Instagram.

“For me, it’s 100% a headstroke. The real message I get from his press conference is the fact that he doesn’t want his opponents to know that he has a weakness there.

“He actually has one big weakness, which is his resistance to the extreme heat and humidity. When you have both, it’s even worse.

“That’s not the first time it happened. It happened in Shanghai. He had to retire during the match because he was cramping full body. He almost lost at the Australian Open. He was cramping so badly, but they closed the roof, put on the air conditioning, so he finally won.

“I understand he doesn’t want to say it. He probably doesn’t want his opponent to think that, when the weather is very hot, if I play against Jannik, I have a chance. I’ve won this match. So this is not new.

“It’s a real subject for Jannik. Now he has to focus on Wimbledon, but right after it’s going to be the American Swing. Extreme conditions. The heat and the humidity is terrible. And quite often at the US Open as well.”

Jannik Sinner’s points to defend during the grass-court season

With his departure from Roland Garros, Sinner will now set his sights on the grass-court season, where he was incredibly successful last year.

But Sinner has already opted not to play at the Halle Open this year, meaning Wimbledon is the only tournament he will play on the surface.

He will be defending a total of 2000 ATP points at the Wimbledon championships, having clinched the title for the first time last season.

Sinner recorded a fantastic campaign at the All England Club in 2025, which ended with a four-set win over his rival, Carlos Alcaraz.

With the triumph, Sinner ended Alcaraz’s 5-0 record in major finals, and became the first Italian to secure a singles title at Wimbledon.
