Tennis fans might have feared they had seen the back of Venus Williams at this year’s US Open, but now things have changed.
Williams was beaten in the opening round by the number 11 seed Karolina Muchova, despite putting up a valiant effort.
Williams has discussed whether she might play more on the WTA Tour, and fans would certainly relish seeing her in action more often.
As far as the US Open goes, that will become a reality, with Williams now announcing that she will be playing again at Flushing Meadows this year.
Venus Williams signs up for US Open doubles event
After playing alongside Reilly Opelka in the Mixed Doubles event prior to the US Open main draw getting underway, Venus has now signed up for the Women’s Doubles.
It’s been announced that the 45-year-old will play alongside Canadian player Leylah Fernandez when the tournament gets underway tomorrow.
The pair will face Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok and Australian Ellen Perez in round one in a match that will be scheduled for tomorrow at some point.
The older Williams sister has claimed two Women’s Doubles titles before at the US Open, winning in 1999 and 2009, with her sister Serena her partner on both occasions.
What Leylah Fernandez said about Venus Williams last week
This must be getting close to dream-come-true territory for Fernandez after some comments she made about Williams last week.
With Williams making a comeback of sorts, Fernandez was quizzed on the legendary figure and she had some kind words for her new doubles partner.
She told Tennis Up To Date: “Venus, she reminded me that tennis is a privilege, that tennis is a sport where you have fun, you get down and you get back up, and you’re still laughing, if you lose a point or when you win the point and you kind of just compete that way.”
The pair face a tough opening match at the tournament but if they can come through that, who knows how far they could go at the US Open.
