Wimbledon is now well underway, where ATP and WTA number ones Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka enjoyed winning starts.

But the same cannot be said of many seeded players at Wimbledon, who suffered shock upsets in their opening matches.

Women’s second seed Coco Gauff is out of Wimbledon already, along with third seed Jessica Pegula and fellow top 10 player Qinwen Zheng.

They were joined by the likes of men’s seeds Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune among others.

Another talking point in the early stages of the Grand Slam has been the weather, with Wimbledon having just experienced its hottest opening day on record.

Patrick Mouratoglou shares ‘crazy’ issue he’s spotted with Wimbledon practice courts

Temperatures reached 32.3C on Monday afternoon, with legendary coach Patrick Mouratoglou discussing such weather in his analysis of the tournament so far.

Sharing insight into the current situation, he said on talkSPORT: “I think it’s hit all over Europe but it also strikes here.

“If you look at the practice courts it’s crazy, they are already dead because of the heat. They look like what they usually look like after 10 days of the tournament.

“But why not? It’s different from every year because usually we have much more rain but for the moment we have only sun and heat.

“It’s going to be different conditions of play but maybe that is one of the reasons why we have so many surprises in the first round.”

Mouratoglou certainly knows his tennis, with the Frenchman having worked with the likes of Serena Williams and Simona Halep.

Now in charge of another WTA star, Mouratoglou sees progress in Naomi Osaka, who did manage to win her opener at Wimbledon.

But others weren’t so fortunate, with her upcoming US Open mixed doubles partner Nick Kyrgios having also given his take on the major upsets thus far.

“That is maybe why there are so many upsets and so many seeds falling down,” said 2022 Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios.

“I just think he’s right, there is a lot of rain usually. It is cold. Sometimes I have played a match over three days because of the rain. So now being the two hottest days recorded it’s interesting.”

The weather situation has, however, now changed dramatically on day three, with the start of play delayed due to rain.
