Jannik Sinner is the latest high-profile player to get his Wimbledon campaign underway, with all eyes on the world number one on Tuesday.

Sinner is the top seed at Wimbledon this year, and has been drawn to face fellow Italian Luca Nardi in the first round.

He enters the Grand Slam on the back of a round of 16 exit at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, falling to eventual champion Alexander Bublik.

And that defeat followed the ATP number one losing the French Open final to Carlos Alcaraz, having previously suffered the exact same fate at the Italian Open.

Alcaraz is now chasing a sixth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, with Sinner looking for the fourth such success of his career in London.

What happened in Jannik Sinner’s training sessions ahead of Wimbledon

Two members of Sinner’s team departed before Wimbledon, with another of his coaches, Darren Cahill, now sharing what else happened with the Italian before the Grand Slam started.

Speaking of his player on ESPN, Cahill said: “He has had his best week of practice on grass that he’s ever had. He is rejuvenated, he is fresh, mentally he looks good.

“The first couple of matches will be interesting. He has to get his teeth into the tournament but I think if he can get through the first couple of matches he will be completely fine.

“He knows that he has got 10 or 12 years at the top of the game if he continues to work the way he is working.

“He knows he is going to have a lot more chances against Carlos Alcaraz in finals. They will play a lot of big matches and he will get his wins.

“The fact also that had he won that tournament we would be competing here for the Sinner slam. He would have had three in a row.

“So he knows he is around the mark, he is improving all the time on grass. So mentally he has great self awareness and great perspective of where he is in the game and what he has done to get himself into this position.

“He takes everything with a grain of salt. He realises what he did at Roland Garros was amazing. It did not quite come out the way he wanted it to come out but he will get another chance.”

What is Jannik Sinner’s Grand Slam finals record heading into Wimbledon?

Like the entire tennis world, Sinner is clearly aware of his superb ability on the court, with his number one ranking under no threat once again.

The 23-year-old occupies top spot ahead of his rival Alcaraz, another world-class talent who is set to dominate men’s tennis for the foreseeable future alongside Sinner.

Following the French Open, the pair have now combined to win each of the last six Grand Slam titles, and seven of the last eight.

Only 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has made a dent in their success, but the Serbian is now in the very latter stages of his career.

That should leave Sinner and Alcaraz to fight it out for several Grand Slam titles in the coming years, beginning with Wimbledon.

They even look set to battle it out away from Grand Slams for a long time to come, with Sinner’s 19 ATP titles just behind the 21 of Alcaraz, both tallies that are certain to grow rapidly.
