Victoria Azarenka continues to tumble down the rankings this year.

Azarenka is a former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion, having won the Australian Open in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013.

However, she has not played a single match since the US Open in August last year, with Azarenka missing the Australian Open for the first time in six years.

With Azarenka’s absence from the WTA Tour continuing, she has now fallen to her lowest ranking since 2018.

Victoria Azarenka is on the cusp of falling outside the top 200

The most recent tournament Azarenka missed was at Indian Wells, where she reached the second round last year.

Azarenka had already dropped outside the top 100 at the end of last year, and she has now fallen even further.

In the latest update of the WTA rankings, Azarenka has fallen a further 22 places to world number 195.

This is Azarenka’s lowest ranking since March 2018, with Azarenka now on the brink of falling outside the top 200.

That will happen at the Miami Open, where Azarenka will drop another 35 ranking points.

It still remains unclear as to the reason why Azarenka has not played a match this year, with the former world number one not commenting on this and she has also not posted on social media since New Year’s Eve.

With Azarenka now being 36 years old, there are starting to be questions about whether she will ever return to the WTA Tour again.

Aryna Sabalenka could equal one of Victoria Azarenka’s records at the Miami Open

While Azarenka has not played a match all year, some of her records are still very relevant.

This includes being one of only four women to have completed the sunshine double, which Azarenka achieved in 2016.

Azarenka’s Belarusian compatriot and Indian Wells champion Aryna Sabalenka could join her in holding this record at the Miami Open this year.

If Sabalenka wins the Miami Open then she will become the fifth woman to complete the sunshine double and Belarus will be the first nation to have two women achieve this historic feat.

The main draw of the WTA tournament will get underway on Tuesday, March 16, but there are concerns about the Miami Open due to weather.
