Venus Williams won her first match in nearly two years after beating Peyton Stearns in the first round of the Washington Open.

Williams has been congratulated by Naomi Osaka and many others after her victory, where she made history at 45 years old.

This has continued a very positive start to the comeback for Williams, who also won in doubles alongside Hailey Baptiste.

After watching her beat Stearns in the American capital, Williams’ former coach has revealed what he noticed about her that was the same as when she won her first match in 1994.

Rick Macci notices similarity between Venus Williams’ first and most recent WTA win

Williams won her first match at just 14 years old in 1994, beating Shaun Stafford at the WTA event in Oakland, California.

Rick Macci, who was her coach at the time, has now reacted to her latest victory 31 years later.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Macci revealed that Williams has the same smile that she did after winning her first WTA match all those years ago.

He wrote, “After Venus won at age 14 she was a SMILING HUMAN POGO STICK waiting to shake hands at the net in 1994.

“After Venus won at age 45 she as a SMILING HUMAN POGO STICK waiting to shake hands at the net in 2025. Same inner joy Wire that made Vee soar even higher.”

Macci coached both Williams sisters as children, and once predicted how many majors Venus would have won without Serena in the frame.

Who is Venus Williams playing next?

In her post-match interview after beating Stearns at the Washington Open, Williams was told that her next opponent was Magdalena Frech.

Williams appeared to be unclear as to who Frech actually is, but her upcoming opponent is actually the world number 24 and fifth seed at this year’s Washington Open.

Frech won the biggest title of her career at the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara last year, but has failed to win back-to-back matches since the Australian Open.

It has been an even lengthier period since the last time Williams won two matches in a row, which came at the Cincinnati Open all the way back in August 2019.

Before Williams can focus on her first-time meeting with Frech, she will have to switch her attention back to her upcoming doubles quarterfinal alongside the aforementioned Baptiste.
