Coco Gauff was looking for a big win in her opening match at Wimbledon, but it wasn’t to be.

Fresh off the back of Gauff’s Roland Garros win, the American headed to Wimbledon searching for more Grand Slam success.

Fans were prematurely looking ahead to a potential third major final between Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka, before the 21-year-old suffered a shock defeat in her opening match.

In straight sets, Gauff fell to Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-7, 1-6, as her Wimbledon struggles continued.

Reacting to the biggest win of her career, Yastremska shared what her relationship with Gauff is really like during her on-court interview.

Dayana Yastremska says she and Coco Gauff have a ‘very good relationship’

The world number 42 was delighted to secure the win, as she gave her verdict on Gauff after the match.

“First thing I am going to say is that this court brings me a lot of nice memories because I played here at juniors finals on this court, so it gave me a lot of emotions,” she said.

“I think it was a great match today. I was really on fire. I have even fire on my nails.

“Playing against Coco [Gauff] is something special. I played her already three times, it’s 3-1 to her. So she is a great player and a great person. We have a very good relationship.

Yastremska had struggled for form on clay before transitioning to grass, as she shared her thoughts on the surface, having booked her spot in round two.

“My preparation before the grass season wasn’t very good. I got sick at Roland Garros,” she said.

“Then two days I played on grass and straight away I went to the finals in Nottingham, so that was pretty unexpected, but I think it’s a great season for me.

“I played some great matches, and I am enjoying being on the court a lot. I love playing on the grass. I feel we are friends.”

Yastremska has now won seven matches on grass in 2025, as she continues to impress on the WTA Tour.

The Ukrainian will no doubt hope to add an eighth win to her tally when she takes on Anastasia Zakharova in the second round on Thursday, July 3.

Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon woes continue with first-round loss

Wimbledon has been far from a happy hunting ground for Gauff so far, as she has yet to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club.

The American star has now lost in the first round in two of her previous three visits to SW19, falling to Sofia Kenin in 2023 and Yastremska in 2025.

In total, Gauff has won just 65% of her matches at Wimbledon, by far her worst of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

She’ll be looking to improve her record when she returns in 2026, but will now focus on the next Grand Slam event, the US Open.

A champion at Flushing Meadows two years ago, Gauff will be confident of a strong showing at her home major later this year.

The 2025 US Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 24.
