Tracy Austin has responded to the news that Novak Djokovic will not compete at the ATP Finals.
The 37-year-old has not played since the Six Kings Slam exhibition event, which came after he lost to Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters final.
There was plenty of speculation around whether the Serbian would compete at the season-ending championships after he withdrew from the Paris Masters.
But on Tuesday the 24-time Grand Slam winner announced he would not defend his title in Turin and therefore ended his 2024 season.
What did Tracy Austin say about Novak Djokovic withdrawing from the ATP Finals?
Including the Davis Cup, Novak Djokovic played in just ten tour events in 2024.
He played a significantly reduced schedule as he aimed to peak for the Grand Slams and the Paris Olympic Games.
The Serbian had to take even more care after sustaining a knee injury which forced him to pull out of the French Open in June. Now his season is over, Tracy Austin reacted to Djokovic missing the ATP Finals, and she is not shocked by the news.
“I am not surprised at all,” the American told Tennis Channel podcast. “We saw him just a few days ago vacationing in the Maldives with his family. The ongoing injury, I am going to presume, is the knee which was surgical repaired between the French Open and Wimbledon.
“He was really pushing it to play the majors, got to the finals of Wimbledon, won the Olympics. That’s the crown jewel he wanted so much.
“He’s a seven time champion, he is probably thinking let’s shut it down, let the knee really heal before I start 2025 with vengeance.”

How does Tracy Austin think Novak Djokovic will start the 2025 season?
2024 was a strange one for Djokovic. He failed to win a Slam for the first time since 2017 and also lost the World number one ranking.
Djokovic only claimed one title, though it was the Olympic gold medal, the one he craved more than any other.
Djokovic said he pulled out of the ATP Finals due to injury, and will therefore spend the offseason returning to full fitness and training for the start of the 2025 season.
While speaking about the start of next season, Austin predicted the events Djokovic will start his campaign with.
“He said he is focusing on playing for his country and the slams,” the two-time US Open winner added. “To me that means United Cup, Aussie Open next for Novak.”
