The 2025 Masters 1000 season continues as players prepare for the clay court tournament in Monte-Carlo.

Jack Draper and Jakub Mensik picked up surprise wins at the Sunshine Double Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami last month.

Heading to Monte-Carlo, it’s anybody’s guess who will win the title, as several top ATP stars look to be in contention.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the defending champion and the most successful active player at the event, having won in the principality three times (2021, 2022, 2024).

Miami Open runner-up Novak Djokovic could also be dangerous, after finding his feet with a strong showing in Florida recently.

One top five star who had hoped to improve on his previous best run to the semifinals won’t be able to do so in 2025, following his withdrawal due to injury.

Taylor Fritz withdraws from the Monte Carlo Masters through injury

World number four Taylor Fritz won’t be appearing at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2025, as he continues to recover from an injury he sustained in Miami.

Fritz had already pulled out of this week’s UTS event in Nimes, and is now likely to begin his clay court campaign in Munich.

The American has won eight matches in Monte-Carlo so far in his career but lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the first round last year.

Taylor Fritz’s career results at the Monte-Carlo Masters

Fritz led Andrey Rublev by a set to love in the 2023 semi-finals when he came closer than ever to reaching a first career Masters 1000 final on clay.

He’ll have to wait for 2026 to go one better in Monte-Carlo but will first focus on his recovery from an abdominal injury.

Fritz won’t be the only big name missing the event, as former world number six Hubert Hurkacz took to X to announce his decision to withdraw from the year’s only non-mandatory Masters 1000 event.

“Skipping MC [Monte-Carlo] this time,” he said.

“Got some homework to finish.”

The big-serving Pole withdrew ahead of his opening match at the Miami Open recently, suffering another setback in his tricky 2025 season.

Hurkacz currently sits in 49th place in the Live ATP ‘Race to Turin’, with his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals for a third time looking slim at the moment.

Like Fritz, Hurkacz is scheduled to return to the court in Munich for the ATP 500 event later this month.

Will Taylor Fritz be the favorite for the 2025 Munich Open when he returns from injury?

Despite winning eight titles on the ATP Tour, Fritz is yet to lift a trophy on the clay, losing his only previous final in Munich last year.

In 2024 Fritz made an impressive run to the final, where he lost out in straight sets to home favorite Jan-Lennard Struff.
