Roland Garros has just shut its doors for another year, but Wimbledon is right around the corner.

Carlos Alcaraz fought back to beat Jannik Sinner in the men’s singles final at Roland Garros, despite his opponent having three championship points.

The Spaniard is also a two-time defending champion at Wimbledon, with Alcaraz beating Novak Djokovic in both the 2023 and 2024 finals.

Despite finishing as runner-up both of the last two years, Djokovic could still have a chance at Wimbledon.

However, a current top 20 ATP player’s chances at Wimbledon appear to be in doubt after he withdrew from an upcoming grass court tournament.

Arthur Fils furthers Wimbledon doubts after withdrawing from tournament

One of the most memorable matches at Roland Garros this year involved promising young Frenchman Arthur Fils, who won a four and a half hour match against Jaume Munar.

The French crowd were raucous on Court Suzanne-Lenglen as they cheered on the French number one, who appeared to be struggling physically after winning only two games in the third and fourth sets.

These concerns were then confirmed after Fils withdrew from his next match against Andrey Rublev due to a stress fracture in his back.

When Fils spoke to press after his withdrawal, he suggested that this was a recurring back problem and revealed that he could be out for four to six weeks.

With Wimbledon just under three weeks away, the world number 14 has now withdrawn from his upcoming grass court tournament in Halle.

Fils has now been replaced by Belgian Zizou Bergs, who will take his place for the ATP 500 tournament that is also set to feature Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev.

Will Arthur Fils have to undergo surgery on his back?

When Fils revealed that his back injury is reoccurring, he was subsequently asked in his press conference whether it would require surgery.

In his response, the 20-year-old claimed that he did not think surgery would be required, but also could not confirm if he would be able to play Wimbledon and suggested that the hard court season was his priority.

“I don’t think I’m going to have to undergo surgery,” said Fils. “I don’t think so. It’s a good question, but I don’t think so.

“As for the grass season, as I said earlier, I don’t know yet. We’ll see if I can be ready for Wimbledon. I’m not sure. We’ll see. It’s on hold for the moment.

“It will take time. I’m only 20 years old. I don’t want to be in a hurry on the tour. I don’t need to ramp up everything. I need to be ready for the hard court season, for the end of the year, and this is for the best.”

Fils achieved his best result at Wimbledon last year, reaching the fourth round before losing to Alex de Minaur.

He now faces a race against time to be fit for the grass court major that begins on Monday, June 30.
