Toni Nadal reveals what he's been told about Carlos Alcaraz's split with Juan Carlos Ferrero

The dust is beginning to settle on Carlos Alcaraz’s split with Juan Carlos Ferrero, but the surprise still remains.

Alcaraz split with Ferrero earlier this month, bringing an end to a relationship that started when the former was 15.

Now 22 years old, Alcaraz is a six-time Grand Slam champion, winning all six titles under the guidance of the latter.

He has also risen to number one in the ATP Tour rankings, a feat Ferrero achieved during his playing career.

Their fellow Spaniard and veteran coach Toni Nadal has now weighed in on the situation, having himself helped Rafael Nadal to stunning success.

Nadal said to Clay of the split: “I understand that nothing is done without Carlos’ approval, of course.

“I’ve been told that they gave him a contract and that he had to respond within 48 hours.

“It’s a bit strange after a seven-year relationship to be rushed into making such decisions.”

Nadal certainly wasn’t finished there with his assessment of the situation, which will have particularly rocked tennis in Spain.

Sharing how different the player-coach relationship in tennis is compared to other sports, he said: “The difference is very clear.

“Normally, coaches, due to their age, are the ones who make the decisions.

“In tennis, the coach accompanies the player wherever he wants to go.

“And it’s difficult. There comes a point where it’s hard to balance things.”

It remains to be seen what both parties do next, although remarkably Ferrero could return to coach Alcaraz at some point in the future.

For now, however, Alcaraz seems destined to hire a new coach as he looks ahead to another season on the ATP Tour.

The Australian Open will already arrive next month, with the Melbourne event representing the only Grand Slam that Alcaraz has yet to win.
