Toni Nadal explained what he did not like about Rafael Nadal’s retirement ceremony.
His nephew’s illustrious tennis career came to an end following Spain’s elimination from the Davis Cup finals.
In front of their home fans in Malaga, captain David Ferrer’s team suffered a 2-1 defeat to The Netherlands to bring their campaign to a shocking halt.
Following the contest a tribute ceremony was held for Rafael Nadal to honour his retirement, but his uncle wished things had gone differently.
What did Toni Nadal think of Rafael Nadal’s retirement ceremony?
After Nadal lost his Davis Cup finals singles match to leave Spain trailing 0-1, heavy responsibility fell on the shoulders of Carlos Alcaraz to turn things around.
The 21-year-old made a good start by winning his singles encounter against Tallon Griekspoor, before competing in the deciding doubles match with Marcel Granollers.
The four-time Grand Slam champion fell short on this occasion, as a 6-7, 6-7 defeat ended Spain’s Davis Cup finals hopes.
Nadal was given a standing ovation by the fans, received a special plaque and watched a tribute video that featured some of his former rivals such as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
But Toni Nadal, who was unable to attend his nephew’s last match, expressed what he did not like about the former World number one’s tribute and what he would have changed.
“No (laughs). It was certainly emotional with the public’s support. I like to see images in these events,” uncle Toni told El Larguero on SER radio.
“I would have liked to see images of Rafael winning the Davis Cup in Seville, of Rafael at the Madrid tournament, at Roland Garros or Wimbledon, because this creates more emotion.
“I’m not trying to criticise anyone. I would have preferred something different, more in line with his career. I appreciate the gesture they had as a family member and former coach of Rafael, and the good intentions, but afterwards, I would have liked something else.
“Nowadays, much more emotional events can be organised by mixing music with images, and Rafael is a person whose images convey passion and emotion. If they had done this, it would have been more fitting.”

Toni Nadal explains the timing of Rafael Nadal’s retirement
In 2023 Nadal admitted that 2024 could be the final season of his career.
In January he returned to action after a year on the sidelines due to a hip injury and as the year went on, it became clear Nadal perhaps did not have long left of his career.
Including his final match at the Davis Cup finals, Nadal competed in just 20 matches this season and suffered more fitness issues as he struggled to rediscover his best tennis.
In October Nadal announced he would retire at the Davis Cup, and Toni Nadal has shed some more light on his nephew’s decision.
“It was a foreseen outcome. We all knew that this day had to come,” uncle Toni added. “Seeing how the last few months unfolded, you could tell that things were not going well and I believe Rafael made the most appropriate decision.
“It’s true that many people said he waited too long. It’s because he got used to pushing until the very end in everything, in his matches, in his recoveries… and he trusted that his body would hold up. This time it didn’t work out, so he did what needed to be done.”
