Tommy Paul has been crowned as the new Queen’s champion for the first time during his career after beating Lorenzon Musetti yesterday.

The American capped a brilliant day by lifting the pre-Wimbledon prize and in the process becoming the USA’s number one player.

Paul was clearly overjoyed on the court after coming through a tough tie-breaker to win the second set 7-6 against the Italian.

After the match, Paul was quizzed on his relationship with the other American players and in particular Frances Tiafoe.

He was forced out of Queen’s when he picked up an injury following a slip on the surface and it’s not been confirmed yet how he’s doing.

Tommy Paul shares what Frances Tiafoe said to him after Queen’s final

This was a great week for Paul and he came through some tough matches to claim the trophy at Queen’s.

Now, he will head into Wimbledon full of confidence and he will be looking to reach the quarter-final for the first time at the very least.

Paul did a press conference after his win in London yesterday and he shared what Tiafoe texted him on the morning of the match.

He told Tennis TV: “It’s a healthy competition between us all.

“Frances texted me last night saying, ‘Finish your food’ because every time he’s playing he always says, ‘Eat’, kind of like motivation.

“I took what he said on board and kind of ran with it.”

Tommy Paul can now be dangerous at Wimbledon

The field at SW19 does feel more open than usual ahead of the 2024 instalment.

With Novak Djokovic on the way back from an injury, he perhaps won’t be the heavy favourite that he normally is leading into the tournament.

Jannik Sinner won in Australia back in January, whilst Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open earlier this month.

As far as outside bets for the title go, Paul has to now be in the discussion.

He blew Musetti away yesterday and although there will be tougher challenges at Wimbledon, his game does look suited for grass.

The 27-year-old has been to one semi-final in the Grand Slam events and that simply won’t do for a player boasting his quality.

Paul is now at number 12 in the world and the next aim for the American will be to break into the world’s top 10.

A strong Wimbledon would help him do that and Paul cannot be ignored going into the tournament which gets underway next Monday.
