For over a year, Jannik Sinner held the world number one ranking, dominating his ATP Tour rivals.

The Italian star was a point away from winning three of the four Grand Slams this year, as he took his game to another level.

He has, however, struggled against one man, losing to Carlos Alcaraz four times this year.

Two of those defeats came in major finals, as Sinner lost to Alcaraz at Roland Garros and at the US Open.

Losing to Alcaraz at Flushing Meadows, Sinner’s 65-week stint as world number one came to an end.

The Spaniard has had the better of his rival over recent months, although he isn’t the only player gaining momentum on the ATP Tour

Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz have both won more matches than Jannik Sinner since June

Since the start of June, Sinner has picked up 20 ATP Tour wins, which is an impressive tally considering he’s only played 23 matches.

That tally is not, however, enough to see him top the leaderboards, as he currently sits tied with Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton in third.

It’s America’s Taylor Fritz who leads the way with 30 match wins, having rediscovered his form in the second half of the season after a slow start to the year.

Fritz picked up two titles on grass, winning in Stuttgart and Eastbourne, before making deep runs at Wimbledon, the Canadian Open, and the US Open.

A day after Sinner notched win number 20, Fritz hit the 30-mark, defeating Nuno Borges in the second round of the Japan Open.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Alcaraz in second, with 26 wins, many of which came during his Cincinnati Open and US Open title campaigns.

Tied with Sinner on 20 wins are Shelton and Bublik, the latter being one of 2025’s surprise packages.

The Kazakh star has won four titles since the beginning of June, showing his class at the ATP 500 and ATP 250 events.

Bublik did, however, lose his first-round match in China, meaning he will remain on 20 wins for the foreseeable, as will Shelton, who is currently out injured.

Therefore, Sinner will take the third spot for himself should he win his next match at the China Open against Frenchman Terence Atmane.

The pair will face off for a place in the quarterfinals on Saturday, September 27.

What happened the last time Jannik Sinner played Terence Atmane?

Sinner and Atmane played earlier this summer at the Cincinnati Open Masters 1000 event.

Advancing to the main draw as a qualifier, Atmane enjoyed a remarkable run through to the last four in Cincinnati, where he met the then world number one.

Giving Sinner a birthday present before they walked out to play their semifinal, Atmane handed the Italian a Pokémon card.

Sinner appreciated the gesture, although that didn’t stop him from rolling past Atmane in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.

The 24-year-old was excellent from start to finish and didn’t give his opponent a single break point opportunity in Ohio.

Picking up an injury at the Cincinnati Open, Atmane was forced to withdraw from the US Open and only returned to the tour recently.

After losing his opening match in Chengdu, the 23-year-old Frenchman won the qualifying event in Beijing to secure his spot in the main draw.

There, he secured his first win since the Cincinnati Open, defeating Zhang Zhizhen in straight sets.

Just as he was in Cincinnati, he will be a big underdog against Sinner at the China Open, but that likely won’t bother Atmane, who has already beaten two top-ten players this year.

Only time will tell if he can secure the biggest win of his career against Sinner in Beijing.
