Jannik Sinner was looking to win his fifth Grand Slam title at the US Open, but came up short.

Taking on Carlos Alcaraz in a major final for the third time this year, Sinner didn’t have the best of starts, dropping the first set, 2-6.

Bouncing back in the second, Sinner levelled the final at one set apiece, but couldn’t carry that momentum forward.

Winning the third and fourth sets 6-1 and 6-4, Alcaraz sealed the win, taking his Grand Slam tally to six.

Sinner will undoubtedly have been disappointed with the defeat, but won’t want to dwell on it for long, as he’s set to return to ATP Tour action in two weeks’ time.

The Italian has a busy schedule between now and the end of the year, and has just been announced as a participant for another ATP 500 event in October.

Jannik Sinner adds the Vienna Open to his busy schedule

In a video posted to social media, Sinner announced his entry into the Vienna Open.

“I’m happy to announce that I’ll be back in the Stadthalle in October,” he said.

“It’s a very special tournament, I like the city, and of course, the tournament.

“I have really beautiful memories with the win two years ago. That’s why I’m happy to be back.

“We’ll see each other soon.”

Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in the Vienna Open final two years ago, but chose not to return in 2024.

Adding Vienna to his schedule, Sinner is now set to play seven tournaments between now and the end of the year.

Sinner will hope to finish his year on a high note, but how did he perform during the latter stages of his 2024 campaign?

Following his triumph over Taylor Fritz at the 2024 US Open, Sinner returned to action in Beijing at the China Open.

Advancing to the championship match, it was there that Sinner suffered his final defeat of the season, at the hands of his greatest rival, Alcaraz.

After losing a thriller in Beijing, Sinner travelled to Shanghai, where he kick-started a lengthy winning streak.

Finishing the year in style, Sinner won 14 matches in a row, picking up three (four including Six Kings Slam) titles.

Only time will tell if he can repeat the success he enjoyed last year in 2025, but it will certainly be worth tuning in for.

Sinner is set to return to tennis at the China Open, which begins on Monday, September 22.
