Carlos Alcaraz was unable to match an Andy Murray record at the ATP Finals this year.

Alcaraz was beaten by Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals in Turin, in just his second defeat to his Italian rival this year.

Despite being unable to win the prestigious tournament, Alcaraz is still confirmed as the year-end number one.

While Alcaraz may be the world number one, he has been unable to match a record achieved by Andy Murray in 2016.

Andy Murray maintains record after Carlos Alcaraz loses to Jannik Sinner

Alcaraz had enjoyed the best season of his career in 2025, having won eight titles heading into the ATP Finals, including the French Open and the US Open.

Who will join Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in a new ‘big three’?

The Spaniard could have made it nine if he had beaten Sinner in the final, but his defeat means he can no longer match a record achieved by Murray in 2016.

Culminating in victory at the ATP Finals, Murray won nine titles in 2016 and no other ATP player has won that many in a calendar year since then.

This was the best season of Murray’s career, having won the Wimbledon title, Olympic gold and the ATP Finals to climb to become world number one.

Although Alcaraz is world number one, his loss to Sinner means that Murray’s record will continue for at least another year.

What is the highest number of titles Novak Djokovic has won in one season?

While it may have been nine years since an ATP player last won nine titles, Murray is not the only player to have achieved this feat.

This includes Novak Djokovic, who Murray coached earlier this year, with the Serbian achieving this feat in two years.

Djokovic’s most decorated season was in 2015, when he won 11 titles in one year including three Grand Slams.

Big three playerYears when they won 9+ titles
Novak Djokovic2 (2011 & 2015)
Rafael Nadal2 (2005 & 2013)
Roger Federer3 (2004, 2005 & 2006)

Djokovic is not the only member of the big three to achieve this, with both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer also managing it on multiple occasions.

Federer leads in this category having won at least nine titles in three consecutive years, including lifting 12 trophies in 2006.
