The Madrid Open plans to resume on Tuesday morning, with a large majority of Monday’s matches having been cancelled.
Madrid Open organisers brought a halt to Monday’s remaining action due to a power outage across the nation, with a handful of matches having been in play at the time.
Portugal was also impacted by the issue, with Taylor Fritz joking about the power loss after reaching the last 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
It impacted scoreboards, the electronic line calling system and cameras, forcing all play to be suspended, with tennis fans left shocked by the power loss.
The match between Briton Jacob Fearnley and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov was, for example, suspended mid-play due to the spider cam left hanging above the court and out of action.

Rennae Stubbs criticises Madrid Open over ‘annoying’ problem
There has, however, been another issue spotted at the Madrid Open by former professional Rennae Stubbs, which she has compared to the US Open.
Speaking on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, the Australian commented: “These tennis facilities that built these stadiums where they have roofs or things which go over it and don’t think about the sun. It’s so annoying, you cannot watch the tennis on television. It’s like the US Open!”
Tennis fans criticise ‘unwatchable’ Madrid Open as sun creates issue
Stubbs certainly isn’t alone in her criticism of the sun issue at the Madrid Open, with many fans taking to social media to share their frustration.
One wrote on X: “This [Belinda] Bencic [Coco] Gauff match is completely unwatchable because of the sun on the court. Cannot see the ball on one half of the court.”

A second said: “Can’t see the ball at times during this Gauff vs Bencic match because of how the very bright sun is hitting the clay and reminded of how the Madrid Open once experimented with blue clay to improve the ability to see the ball. Probably shouldn’t have dismissed that idea so quickly.”
Other frustrated fans noted: “The sun is making this Madrid open unwatchable” and “It’s pure trash. The sun blinding 1/4 of the court, ELC is a joke, 2 weeks is torture.”
