Jannik Sinner was emphatic in his win over Chris Eubanks yesterday, kickstarting his Roland Garros campaign in the best possible way.
It was always going to be a stern test for the American, whose serving let him down as he fell into a swift one-set deficit.
And whilst he continued to put up a fight, he simply did not have enough to lay a glove on the unstoppable Italian, who looked to be moving freely at last.
Worries about Sinner’s injury problems had been mounting in the run-up to this Grand Slam, but those fears were quickly assuaged as fans watched him shine.
However, it was what Eubanks did after the match that has truly drawn acclaim.
Tennis fans react to what Chris Eubanks did at Roland Garros yesterday
Whilst there was unanimous positivity over the 28-year-old’s outfit, as he sported a smart red and white J.Lindeberg number, it was his reaction to one fan in the crowd that has sparked an overwhelming outpouring of love for the tennis star.
After all, whilst those who excel on the court are deservedly lauded, their actions off it are what truly endear these players to the fans.
Well, with one young fan vying for his attention, Eubanks offered him the ultimate souvenir, bringing over one of his pristine white racquets and handing it to the youngster.
Here’s how the tennis world has reacted:
Then, one fan outlined what a pivotal moment this could prove to be in the young man’s life, as he wrote: ‘Such a cool thing to do, never a sore loser and that kid is going to be inspired.’
Another onlooker used this moment to issue a plea to other players, who might opt to destroy their racquets rather than gift them away.
It read: ‘Awesome! I love that. Don’t wreck the racquets, players. Do this.’
Jannik Sinner looked free from injury
Whilst this was an outstanding moment from the day, it is hard to ignore just how imperious Jannik Sinner looked once again.
Eubanks is no slouch, and for a first-round opponent, he marks a tough challenge.
But the 22-year-old went about his business with a minimal fuss, dispatching him 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

What’s most promising is how unimpaired he looked, with fears over his fitness having intensified after he first pulled out mid-way through Madrid before failing to even make an appearance at his home Masters 1000 event in Rome.
But, to be back fit and firing at the French Open is great to see, and should make him one of the favourites to go on and win the whole thing now.
