Taylor Townsend has finally bowed out of the US Open singles after losing a thriller against Barbora Krejcikova.
Krejcikova now meets another American, Jessica Pegula, in the US Open quarterfinals, having also knocked out Emma Navarro.
Pegula has loved Townsend’s US Open run, which ended via a 6-1, 6-7(13-15), 3-6 defeat to Krejcikova at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The duo played for more than three hours before 12-time Grand Slam singles and doubles winner Krejcikova finally overcame two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Townsend.
The victor saved eight match points in the second set, and has now been rewarded for her efforts with a match against 2024 US Open runner-up Pegula.

Her focus is now fully on singles, with Krejcikova having lost in the first round of the women’s doubles, playing alongside Jelena Ostapenko.
Ostapenko was among the players Townsend beat in singles, having also knocked out Antonia Ruzic and WTA number five Mirra Andreeva.
But the American has now suffered an agonising defeat to Krejcikova, after which she wrote on Instagram: “Hear the roar. Left it all out there, but thank you US Open for an unforgettable atmosphere. Onto Doubles tomorrow.”
What is next for Taylor Townsend at the US Open after her singles exit?
Just like Krejcikova, Townsend also signed up for the US Open doubles event, where she is enjoying a strong run so far.
Playing alongside Katerina Siniakova, with whom she has won two Grand Slam doubles titles, Townsend is now preparing for a third round match.
They beat Aldila Sutjiadi and Nadiia Kichenok in round one, before defeating Dayana Yastremska and Alycia Parks in round two.
The top seeds, who boast Wimbledon and Australian Open titles, now take on Yue Yuan and Camila Osorio in the round of 16.
Townsend also took part in the revamped US Open mixed doubles event this year, which took place during Fan Week.
But despite Townsend being named the best mixed doubles player in the world, she failed to make it beyond the quarterfinals with Ben Shelton.
They knocked out fourth seeds Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune in round one, but were defeated by fellow Americans Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison in the quarterfinals.
But doubles number one Townsend can be extremely proud of her singles efforts this time around, particularly given her commanding wins over fifth seed Andreeva and 25th seed Ostapenko.
