Jessica Pegula and Taylor Townsend have been among the American players impressing at the US Open, which is now into week two.

Townsend did, however, have her fantastic run in New York ended in round four, having fallen to Barbora Krejcikova.

The WTA doubles number one lost 6-1, 6-7(13-15), 3-6 in the round of 16 to the Czech ace, another doubles specialist.

Pegula has, however, managed to reach the US Open quarterfinals, having stormed past Ann Li 6-1, 6-2 in round four.

World number four Pegula has been working on her net game, which has helped her shine at the US Open once more.

Jessica Pegula says what she thinks of Taylor Townsend

She reached the final of the 2024 US Open, losing to Aryna Sabalenka, with Krejcikova representing her next opponent at this year’s event.

And Pegula was on hand to discuss her fellow American Townsend before her exit, having been asked in her latest press conference how nice it is to see her compatriot doing well.

“It’s so nice,” replied Pegula. “She played really well the other night against Mirra [Andreeva]. I mean we all know she can play really good tennis.

“She’s a little unorthodox when she’s serving well with the lefty serve. She comes into the net so well, when she’s confident and feeling good, I mean, she’s so dangerous and you don’t really want to play her.

“So, it’s been really nice to see her kind of come through, especially since the last time she had a big result here was so long ago. I think before she had her son as well.

“I feel like the last few years that I’ve talked to her, she just seems really happy. And I am just happy for her.

“She loves being a mom. She doesn’t really play a full schedule all the time, but I think she likes to be home.

“She likes to do things her way and she’s always been like that for as long as I can remember. Whether it’s starting at the net with the volleys or whatever, she’s done that forever.

“So she’s always stepped to her own beat and I commend her for sticking to that. And when you see the results kind of follow, it’s really nice to see.

“I think she was a little unfortunate. I think earlier she had a concussion thing or something that took her out for a while and I think it’s taken her a little time to get back into her form. But that and then her success on doubles.

“We always knew she was going to be number one in the world in doubles if she just had a good partner and played and so now she’s accomplished that and won Slams in that and it’s just cool. We grew up around the same age and we’ve always been pretty good friends so it’s nice to see.”

Which American WTA players are still in the US Open after Taylor Townsend’s exit?

Townsend is ranked 139th in singles, but currently occupies top spot in doubles, with US Open success in that format still possible.

She has just bowed out of the singles tournament, and earlier fell in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles, which she played alongside Ben Shelton.

But Townsend and partner Katerina Siniakova have just reached round three of the women’s doubles event at Flushing Meadows.

The duo have already enjoyed huge success together, winning the 2024 Wimbledon and 2025 Australian Open titles.

Townsend’s US Open singles exit meanwhile leaves Pegula, Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova as the only Americans left in the draw.

Fans will be desperate for a home winner, particularly after Gauff won the 2025 French Open and Madison Keys won the 2025 Australian Open.
