Taylor Fritz is once again a Wimbledon quarter-finalist and after his last 16 match with Jordan Thompson was cut short, he should be well rested.

The American was a set and a double break-up when Thompson left the court for a medical timeout and subsequently returned to shake hands and concede the match to end his Wimbledon aspirations.

Australian performer Thompson was struggling with a lower back injury and took to the court with heavy strapping on his hamstrings.

Fritz looked in the mood from the off, however, and has now set up a second successive quarter-final berth against Karen Khachanov.

Taylor Fritz sends message to Jordan Thompson after beating him at Wimbledon

The USA star is eyeing his first Grand Slam title, and given how useful he is on the grass, he will feel that this represents a good chance for him.

Next up, Fritz faces Khachanov and that does represent a really good chance to reach the semi-finals at the All England Club for the very first time.

Winning in these circumstances wasn’t something that Fritz was too happy about, however, and he admitted that he might go and hit some balls later this afternoon.

In a message to Thompson, he said on court: “”It’s not the way I wanted to go through, I was really excited to get out here and play Jordan and play some good tennis, it’s so sad for him, he’s been battling, he’s been playing five sets and he was out playing long doubles match yesterday, so he’s been battling.

“Respect to him for coming out here, but obviously his body’s not right and so I do feel really bad for him and I hope he gets better.”

Fritz can go all the way at Wimbledon

Going out of the French Open in round one looks to have actually done Fritz a favour in a weird way, with his grass court preparations done properly.

The American is a likeable player on the ATP Tour and it would be a travesty if he never got over the line and lifted one of the game’s biggest prizes.

Fritz will not go into the quarter-final well-rested after his comfortable performance before Thompson threw in the towel on his own quest for Wimbledon glory.

Fritz’s message was a classy one to Thompson and after a strong run himself, he will hope that he can be fit enough to play doubles and then look forward to the hard court campaign.
