Taylor Fritz has now given his verdict on Victoria Mboko, who has been the breakout star of the Canadian Open this year.

Both Fritz and Mboko have reached the Canadian Open semifinals, but one run was more expected than the other.

However, the Canadian teenager has beaten the odds, with Mboko beating the likes of Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin and Marie Bouzkova to achieve her best career result to date.

Mboko has been predicted to surge up the WTA rankings, and now Fritz has revealed what he thinks about the 18-year-old.

After beating Andrey Rublev, 6-3 7-6(4), Fritz has reached the semifinals of the Canadian Open for the first time in his career.

However, the world number four was not just asked about his own performances, with Fritz also being questioned about what was going on in Montreal.

When asked about Mboko, Fritz admitted that he had not seen her play before, but knew by her results that she has what it takes to become a top player.

“Yeah, I mean, I saw that she beat Coco, but I haven’t really been following a ton,” Fritz said in his post-match press conference. “I’ve been playing until 2:00 a.m., and then waking up at like 2:00 p.m.

“But, yeah, she’s obviously very good. You said she’s 18? Yeah, she’s obviously a very good player. I haven’t gotten a chance to, I guess, see her game and watch her play, so I can’t really break it down for you.

“But just to have those results at a very young age, especially at home too, that’s a great feeling. But, yeah, I’m sure she’s moving in the right direction of being a top player.”

There is little turnaround for players still in the Canadian Open, as the Cincinnati Open begins on the same day as the finals in Toronto and Montreal.

Mboko is unsure of whether she will play the Cincinnati Open, but Fritz is already in the draw for the Masters 1000 tournament.

As the fourth seed, Fritz receives an automatic bye to the second round, where he could play 2022 Cincinnati Open champion Borna Coric.

Some of the other potential threats in his half of the draw include Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Flavio Cobolli, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe and world number one Jannik Sinner.

Fritz has lost his last four matches against Sinner, who is a potential semifinal opponent for Fritz.

Before then, Fritz will look to reach just his second Masters 1000 final, when he plays Ben Shelton in the Canadian Open semifinals.

This is just a second-time meeting between Fritz and Shelton, with the former winning their only previous match that took place at Indian Wells in 2023.
