Taylor Fritz achieved something for the first time in 15 years when he reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

He recovered from a two-set deficit to defeat Alexander Zverev to punch his ticket to the last eight at Wimbledon for the second time.

It marked the third time in his career that the 26-year-old has battled back from two sets down to emerge victorious.

The 13th seed will now play Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti for a chance to reach his maiden Grand Slam semi-final.

Taylor Fritz matches Andy Roddick feat at Wimbledon

After defeating Zverev for the fourth time in nine meetings, Fritz became the first American man to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Andy Roddick in 2009.

That year the former World number one made it to the final, and suffered a crushing defeat to Roger Federer in five pulsating sets.

This marked Roddick’s third loss in a Wimbledon final, each time at the hands of the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

The American lost to Federer 21 times during his career, but perhaps none were more devastating than the defeat in the 2009 Wimbledon final.

After Zverev claimed the first two sets of the quarter-final encounter against Fritz, he served a double fault at 4-4 in the third set, which marked the first time he had lost his serve in the tournament.

This proved to be the beginning of the end for the German, as he went on to lose the third set and Fritz only grew in confidence. The 26-year-old hit 67 winners to just 23 unforced errors and delivered 15 aces in the win.

The second serve was key as Fritz won 69% of the points behind his second delivery, to just 47% for Zverev. During a chat with Tennis Channel, the 13th seed explained what he discussed with his opponent after the match.

“At the net, like, it’s no big deal. I think he felt that he was for parts, I guess towards the end of the fifth at least, kind of limping around a bit,” he said.

“I think he was annoyed at some people in my box just being loud, cheering for me. Honestly, I can’t hear. I don’t know. Like, no big deal. He said it’s nothing towards me or anything like that.”
