Taylor Fritz will not play the Italian Open this year after withdrawing from another tournament.

Fritz has been struggling with tendonitis in his right knee since the start of the 2026 season, which has contributed to his mixed results.

After the American lost in the fourth round of the Miami Open, Fritz suggested that he could skip the entire clay court season.

Fritz has since withdrawn from tournaments in Munich, Madrid and he has now pulled out of the Italian Open alongside two other ATP players.

Taylor Fritz continues his absence from the ATP Tour after pulling out of the Italian Open

Fritz is a former quarterfinalist at the Italian Open, but he will not be able to improve on that this year as he has now officially confirmed his withdrawal from the Masters 1000 tournament.

The former US Open finalist is one of the three latest players to have withdrawn from the Italian Open, with Kamil Majchrzak and another American in Eliot Spizziri also confirmed not to be playing in Madrid.

There are now a total of seven players who have pulled out of the men’s singles draw in Rome, headlined by Carlos Alcaraz missing the entire clay court season.

Fritz, Majchrzak and Spizziri’s replacements have now been confirmed, including a player who is retiring from tennis this year.

Fritz and Spizziri have been replaced by Zachary Svajda and James Duckworth, respectively, while Majchrzak has been replaced by former Wimbledon semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut.

Bautista Agut announced that he would be retiring from tennis this year, and he is now confirmed to make one final appearance at the Italian Open.

Could Taylor Fritz drop out of the top 10 if he misses the French Open?

Fritz now looks likely to miss the French Open as well, but his ranking will not actually be impacted too much by this.

During this part of the season last year, Fritz only won three matches on clay and suffered a first round exit at the French Open.

As a result, Fritz has only 70 points to defend after the Madrid Open and will be very likely to remain in the top 10 of the ATP rankings.

This was one of the big reasons why Fritz suggested he could miss the clay court season, as he has a lot less to lose.

Fritz’s biggest outgoings will come during the grass and North American hard court swing, where he could suffer a significant ranking drop if he does not return to either form or fitness.
