Stefanos Tsitsipas outlined what he wants to achieve at the Canadian Open after his Olympics disappointment.

The 26-year-old was unable to deliver Greece a medal after losing to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

He squandered set points against the 24-time Grand Slam champion before coming second best to the Serbian for the 12th successive time.

With the Olympic Games now in the rearview mirror, Tsitsipas is back on courts and is aiming for a strong run at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

What is Stefanos Tsitsipas’ new goal at the Canadian Open?

Stefanos Tsitsipas has struggled to find his best form in 2024, and has won just one title this year so far. His results have seen him fall out of the world’s top 10 and he is desperate to get back into that elite group.

This is why the two-time Australian Open finalist stated that he wants to have a strong in Canada to try and help boost his chances of returning to the top 10 sooner rather than later.

“I try to make the most of my opportunities regardless of the draw and I hope to make my way in this tournament this year,” he told reporters in Montreal. “It’s normal that after an Olympic tournament with certain medal goals you arrive here with great expectations.

“It’s not easy to play after an Olympic tournament, there will be many absentees, half of the players will start on Wednesday and I will have to try to make the most of the matches I played in the previous weeks.

“It would have been different if I had come here with a medal, but my medal for this week will be to try to get closer to returning to the top 10.”

Where is Stefanos Tsitsipas ranked now?

Tsitsipas is currently ranked just outside the world’s top 10 at number 11.

His five year-run in the top 10 ended in February 2024, almost a month after reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The Canadian Open can help push Tsitsipas back towards the top 10, but he faces a tricky opening match against Kei Nishikori. The pair have played on two previous occasions, with the both players gaining one win each.

Nishikori won their first meeting in the quarterfinals of his home tournament in Tokyo, before Tsitsipas won their second contest 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at the Miami Open.
