Stefanos Tsitsipas was unable to lead his country to victory after being beaten by Joao Fonseca.
Tsitsipas admitted he was upset at the US Open after facing continued injury struggles that he thought were no longer present.
Despite these issues, Tsitsipas declared himself fit for the Davis Cup, as Greece took on Brazil in Athens with Novak Djokovic in attendance.
Tsitsipas won his first match against Thiago Seyboth Wild, but was unable to get the job done against Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca.

With Brazil leading the tie 2-1, Fonseca knew that he just needed to beat Tsitsipas to confirm victory for his country.
Despite losing the first set, Tsitsipas found himself 5-3 up on Fonseca and had the opportunity to serve for the match.
However, Fonseca was able to take advantage of Tsitsipas’ nerves and won four consecutive games to confirm victory for Brazil.
This is Tsitsipas’ seventh defeat in his last 10 matches, in what has been a very difficult period for the former world number three.
After getting the win to send his country to the World Group I Play-Offs in 2026, Fonseca posted a message on social media and now Tsitsipas has done the same.
Despite his recent struggles, Tsitsipas was keen to praise both Fonseca and the whole Brazilian team for their victory.
He wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Athens, thank you for the love (love heart emoji). Joao and Brazil, congrats on a well-deserved win.”
What is next for Stefanos Tsitsipas after his Davis Cup defeat?
Tsitsipas will now have a week away from the match court, which will probably be necessary after he took a medical timeout for his back issue during the match with Fonseca.
After competing in his home country, Tsitsipas is now expected to travel to China for two ATP tournaments.
Firstly, Tsitsipas will return to China Open in Beijing, where he was the runner-up in 2019, but elected to play in Tokyo instead last year.
| ATP Tournament | Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Best Result | Stefanos Tsitsipas’ 2024 Result |
| China Open | Final (2019) | Did not play |
| Shanghai Masters | Semifinal (2019) | Fourth Round |
The Masters 1000 event in Shanghai will be Tsitsipas’ other tournament in China, where he will be defending 100 points from reaching the fourth round last year.
Ranking points will be important for Tsitsipas in the latter stages of the 2025 season, as he is currently at risk of falling outside the top 30 for the first time in seven years.
