Joao Fonseca shares what he knew Stefanos Tsitsipas would struggle with during Davis Cup win

Brazil are on the map in the world of tennis, and Joao Fonseca has inspired the nation to qualify for next year’s Davis Cup.

Brazil overcame Greece 3-1 with Fonseca beating Stefanos Tsitsipas to spark jubilation among the Brazilian team.

Tsitsipas overcame injury issues to play for Greece, but he somehow contrived to lose from a winnable position.

Greek star Tsitsipas overcame a back issue from the US Open to take to the court in order to give his country the best possible chance of qualifying for next year’s tournament.

Tsitsipas won the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February, but otherwise, 2025 has been pretty drab, and Fonseca has conceded that he sensed an opportunity against the Greek performer.

Brazil can now look forward to the Davis Cup in 2026, with Fonseca set to spearhead their campaign.

The teen sensation will be part of the qualifying campaign when next year’s Davis Cup gets underway, with Greece and Tsitsipas now set to miss out.

Fonseca is enjoying a solid maiden campaign on the ATP Tour, and after this big win for his country, he conceded what he recognised about Tsitsipas.

He said in his on-court interview: “In Brazil, we say ‘when we are Brazilian, we never give up,’ and when you’re playing for your country, you cannot not believe.

“I wanna thank my team for supporting me to the end. I was just looking at them and the support for each point.

“I knew he’d be nervous. He’s in Greece, he’s losing 1-2 in the tie. He’s more nervous. I just played my game. I’m very happy to win this match.”

Fonseca will be a future star

Even though it’s his maiden year playing professional tennis, Fonseca is already well on his way to stardom.

The Brazilian won a tournament in Argentina earlier this year and has enjoyed some big results at the Grand Slam events too.

At 19, the player is already up to number 42 in the world rankings, and there is optimism that he can really push on next year on the tour.

Fonseca has reached at least the second round of all of the major tournaments this year and his challenge in 2026 will be to make the second week.

Wins like this one over Tsitsipas will only enhance his chances of doing that, with each week on tour proving an experience in itself right now for Fonseca.
