The debate over who has the best backhand in the history of men’s tennis often divides opinion.

A lot of people often prefer the one-handed backhand, which is something that Roger Federer used to great effect over the years.

However, world number one Carlos Alcaraz picked Jannik Sinner as the player with the best backhand, despite being his biggest rival.

The former coach of Serena Williams, Rick Macci, has also gone for a player with a two-handed backhand, but he has not agreed with Alcaraz.

Rick Macci names Novak Djokovic as the player he thinks has the best backhand

Macci is unafraid of making a bold claim on social media, and he has done so again when discussing the best backhand of all time.

While he accepted that there were many players who could have been picked for this, Macci explained why he believes Novak Djokovic has the best backhand of all time.

Macci wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Who has the best backhand of all time. Many in the mix. The leader in the Goat Backhand is by far Novak Joker [Djokovic] the ultimate stroker the Serbian Sniper the ultimate backhand wiper.

“He has hit more, made more, won more and biomechanically he has the optimal science based stroke that is why I go with Mr. Joke.”

Who did Novak Djokovic say had the best backhand of all time?

While Djokovic will likely be pleased to receive this accolade from such a decorated coach like Macci, he actually chose another player when asked the same question.

Djokovic actually selected Andre Agassi as the best backhand of all time when asked this question last month.

Agassi, who once coached Djokovic for a short period, also had a two-handed backhand which helped him win eight Grand Slam singles titles.

While Agassi and Djokovic’s coaching relationship did not last too long, their backhands do appear to have matched up as two of the greatest of all time.

Having used this backhand in Athens, where Djokovic won his 101st ATP title, he may now have different goals for the 2025 season.
