Joao Fonseca has made his presence felt at the start of 2025 and Sam Querrey is very impressed by what he brings to the court.
The Brazilian secured his first top 10 win on his Grand Slam main draw debut, before winning his first title at the Argentina Open.
At just 18 years old, Joao Fonseca is being talked about as a future star to help carry men’s tennis for the next decade and beyond.
Sam Querrey is excited by what the youngster has produced so far and he expects big things from him in 2025.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have stepped up and carried on from where Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic left off.
At Grand Slam level they have eight majors between them and the duo are two of the world’s top three players.
They are at the forefront of the new generation of men’s tennis, but Querrey told the Nothing Major Podcast that Fonseca is not far away from joining them.
“I think he is. Maybe not right away but he is not far off”, he said when answering if Fonseca can challenge Sinner and Alcaraz.
“If you just watch him play tennis, just the eyeball test says that he is so good. The way he moves around the court. The way he hits the ball backhand and forehand. He can absolutely rip it.
“He is passionate about the way he plays. He is just on a tear right now. He is flying high, he is so fun to watch. He is my favourite player to watch play tennis right now, I love watching him play.
“And, yeah, I am still bullish on him. John and I said that he will be seeded for the US Open, I even feel more strongly about that now. An amazing week in Buenos Aires. I’m excited to tune in and see him play for the rest of his life!”

Fonseca announced himself on the world stage by beating Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open.
This came after Fonseca won the Next Gen ATP Finals in December, and won a title on the Challenger tour before heading to Melbourne Park.
After his triumph in Buenos Aires, Fonseca turned to his home country of Brazil to try and win the ATP Rio Open.
But the pressure and expectation was too much for Fonseca to handle on this occasion, as he suffered an opening round defeat.
He will aim to produce his best tennis when the Masters 1000 tournaments begin at the Indian Wells Masters in March.
