Sam Querrey believes there is one player who is more likely than most to end America’s drought of men’s Grand Slam singles champions.

An American man has not won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.

Players have come close to ending this drought, including Querrey who reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2017.

Although he was unable to win a major title, Querrey has now predicted which active American player he thinks is most likely to win a Grand Slam.

Sam Querrey predicts which American is most likely to win a Grand Slam

Only three American men have reached Grand Slam finals since Roddick won the US Open in 2003, including the man himself.

Andre Agassi is one of the others, with the most recent being Taylor Fritz, who reached the US Open final in 2024.

Although Fritz has recently fallen down the ATP rankings and is no longer the American number one, with Ben Shelton now in that position, Querrey believes he is the most likely player representing the USA to win a Grand Slam title.

“I still think it’s [Taylor] Fritz,” Querrey said on The Tennis Worthy Podcast. “It seems like he gets challenged for that number one American spot, whether it’s by Tommy Paul or Ben Shelton, at the end of the day, Taylor is always the guy that jumps on it, and ends number one on the American side, he’s had the best results in the Slams.

“Ben Shelton is right behind him, he’s maybe got a little more firepower in his game. But outside of those two, I’m not really sure if a Tommy Paul, [Reilly] Opelka, [Sebastian] Korda, if they can make a deep run at a Slam this year or next year, who knows?

“But for me, it’s still Fritz. The best part about Fritz’s game is his mind. If you ask Fritz, ‘Who is the best player in the world?’, he might say Taylor Fritz, he’s got that belief, and belief can take you a long way in this game. So for me, he’s still the guy.”

Sam Querrey comments on Taylor Fritz’s knee injury

Although Querrey has backed him as America’s leading contender for major titles, it has been a challenging start to the year for Fritz.

Fritz has been struggling with tendonitis in his knee, and has admitted that he may have to take a break later this year.

While Querrey has reiterated the seriousness of Fritz’s physical issue, he believes the world number nine has the mental capacity to deal with it.

“Hopefully that knee can hold up. Tendonitis is one of those things that can linger, be there for months, and months at a time,” added Querrey. “But if there’s someone who can play through some adversity and some pain, he has the mental toughness to do that.”

Despite this claim, Fritz has suffered another setback when practicing ahead of the Australian Open with just four days to go until the first major of 2026.

The Australian Open draw will take place on Thursday, January 15, with Fritz as the ninth seed.
