Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson predict whether Jannik Sinner will ever be able to repeat the dominance he had in 2024 again

Jannik Sinner was a class above on the ATP Tour in 2024 as he became the number one player in men’s tennis.

The Italian had entered the year as one of the most dangerous players in the sport, but quickly established himself as the best player on the ATP Tour.

Sinner won the Australian Open in January, before doubling his Grand Slam tally with a title in New York later in the year.

He also added three Masters 1000 titles to his collection, with Sinner’s win over Novak Djokovic in Shanghai perhaps the most impressive of them all.

These results saw Sinner reach world number one for the first time, a ranking which he finished the year as, and will be looking to hold on to throughout 2025.

Two former ATP stars have now had their say, as to whether they think Sinner can continue his imperious form into the new year.

Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson think Jannik Sinner is set to dominate tennis again in 2025

Speaking on the Nothing Major podcast, Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson were discussing whether Sinner can enjoy another strong year in 2025.

“I think it could be repeatable,” said Johnson.

“It looks effortless when he is out there playing.

“What he went through this year which none of us knew about from March until the US Open.

“Everything that goes into behind the scenes what he was dealing with with the suspension and drug testing and still produce a historic season is truly remarkable.”

Sinner tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol earlier this year but escaped a ban as an independent tribunal ruled the Italian was not at fault for the doping violation.

The 23-year-old put that behind him and took home the US Open title shortly after, capping off a year that Johnson thinks should scare the rest of the ATP Tour.

“Guys like him and Carlos [Alcaraz], it doesn’t feel like they have even hit their prime,” he said.

“I just think there is better tennis ahead of them which is scary for the rest of the tour.

“An insane season which I didn’t think was possible after Roger [Federer] and these guys did it.”

Querrey agreed although he questioned whether Sinner and Alcaraz are playing in a slightly less competitive era than the one that preceded them.

“Yes, it’s repeatable,” he said.

“I am probably being that guy who thought when I played everyone was better.

“I am still a little more impressed by the Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic records because I feel like the era they played in was stronger than the era right now.

“Again, I am probably just bring that grumpy, retired guy who thinks when he played everyone was better.”

The former Wimbledon semi-finalist went on to explain how that may work in Sinner’s favor, as he looks to dominate once more in 2025.

“So for that reason, I think Sinner is going to have another season like this because I think him and Alcaraz and [Alexander] Zverev is in there too, there is a pretty big gap between those top two or three guys, and everyone ranked between 5-100,” said Querrey.

“So I think he is going to get it again.”

Does Jannik Sinner have any weaknesses?

Sinner won two Grand Slam titles, three Masters 1000s, the ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup in 2024.

Not many people would look at that and suggest that he has any weaknesses, but when the discussion of ‘dominance’ comes up, you almost have to be perfect.

Sinner isn’t quite there yet, and there is an area of his game, or at least a surface, which needs some real work in order to truly dominate on the ATP Tour.

The Italian has yet to win a title above the ATP 250 level on clay, while his two biggest rivals, Alcaraz and Zverev, have both enjoyed some serious success on the red stuff.

The Spaniard and German have achieved far more success on clay, with Sinner’s only title coming in Croatia against Alcaraz back in 2022.

If Sinner is to dominate the ATP Tour in 2025, he will need to rediscover the form he showed in Umag two years ago and start getting the better of his two greatest rivals on the clay.

Sinner is likely to kick off his 2025 clay season at the Munich ATP 500 event, which begins on April 14.
