Roger Federer provided an interesting response to where he sees the Laver Cup 10 years from now and if there will be a women’s version of the event.

The tournament will be held for the seventh time this weekend following its inception in 2017.

This time the Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany will host the Laver Cup and it will be a special one with captains Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe set to lead their respective teams one final time.

Furthermore, Team Europe are looking to regain the title they lost in 2022 while Team World are aiming to win the Laver Cup for a third successive year.

Roger Federer comments on how the Laver Cup could look a decade from now

Roger Federer takes great pride in the Laver Cup and he came up with the idea for the tournament along with his agent Tony Godsick.

They alternate between hosting the tournament in Europe and North America and always aim to select the best players available to represent both teams.

Their main aim is ensuring it is a product that the fans want to come and watch, and Federer wants to keep growing the event to the point that there may even be a women’s version in the future.

“You have options to say maybe we will do two years in Berlin or three years, instead of jumping from one to the next,” Federer told Bloomberg TV’s YouTube channel. “I don’t know, could we play Grand Slam venues?

“Could there be a Laver Cup for women as well? But the concern at the moment is to make sure we have a really good product with the Laver Cup.”

Roger Federer explains why the Laver Cup was created

Federer wanted the Laver Cup to serve as a way to thank the legends of the game while also creating unique moments that otherwise would not have taken place.

The addition of the tournament to the ATP Tour certainly brought plenty of excitement and seeing the likes of Rafael Nadal team up Federer to play doubles not once but twice was a special moment in tennis history.

While describing what the Laver Cup hoped to achieve, Federer said: “At the beginning it was just an idea, talking and discussing on long car rides with my agent Tony.

“I was always talking about how little prize money the past generation was making and I was saying how I am forever grateful for what they have done for our generation of players, that we can play in massive stadiums, they are pretty much sold out, prize money is at an all time high.

“How can we thank them and preserve that? Also maybe create a weekend where we have the best time all together, it’s not two weeks like a grand slam, but make it high intensity.

“This was the idea of the Laver Cup. To pay tribute to the past generation, bring in the new generation and then morphing it all together Ryder Cup style with a concept that would work over the weekend.”
