Roger Federer enjoyed rivalries with many stars of men’s tennis, such was his success and longevity on the court.

The Swiss retired in 2022 as a 20-time Grand Slam champion, with that tally placing him third on the all-time list.

One rival that certainly pushed him all the way over the years was Rafael Nadal, who sits second on the list with 22.

But alone at the top on 24 is Novak Djokovic, who had several intense battles with Federer across the various competitions.

British icon Andy Murray also added himself to the discussion, although the Scot does fall short in terms of Open Era Grand Slams with three.

Roger Federer highlights ‘incredible’ Novak Djokovic feat

Federer certainly didn’t see eye to eye with his rivals at all times, such is the nature of elite-level competition.

But he undoubtedly holds them in high regard, with the Swiss now speaking highly of Djokovic for his status both on and off the court.

When asked if he thinks people have the wrong idea about Djokovic, Federer told El Pais: “It’s hard to say, because everyone thinks a certain way about others.

“I remember that at first I had to fight for my image because they said it was boring. You are exciting! You’re funny! You’re crazy!

“You know, they put you in a box… So you have to accept it and fight against it. At first I also felt quite misunderstood.

“So while everyone loved the rivalry between Rafa and me, suddenly Novak burst in alone, from that point of view, as the third, and… I think it’s incredible how he’s been able to develop as a player and also as a person.

“I also believe that what really connects all of us, including Andy, is the fact of having been parents; Beyond all the games we have played and the rivalry, in that sense we have a lot in common and to talk about.

“He has two children, Andy has four and Rafa was then close to having his first [he would have it a month later]… It was beautiful to be able to experience all that as a family.”

Can Novak Djokovic extend his lead at the top of the Grand Slam list?

Federer’s chances of chasing down Djokovic are, of course, null and void due to his retirement from the game.

But Spanish legend Rafael Nadal remains in with a chance of catching the Serb, albeit a very minimal one.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has opted to skip Wimbledon in order to focus on his upcoming Olympics appearance.

In Paris, the Spaniard will play doubles alongside compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, a partnership that has left many tennis fans very excited.

Djokovic’s presence at the third major of the year meanwhile remains up in the air, with the Serb having withdrawn from the French Open due to a knee injury.

Surgery was required to repair the meniscus tear, with the doctor who performed the surgery confirming that Djokovic will not be 100% fit by the time Wimbledon gets going next month.

But given his ability and determination even when not in peak physical condition, it would be foolish to rule out the Serbian star going all the way in London.
