Taylor Fritz enjoyed a pretty solid showing at Wimbledon, but losing to Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-final cannot be considered anything less than a disappointment.
After all, having beaten Alexander Zverev across a five-set epic, to clash with the world number 25 in the next round marked a harsh change in the narrative.
No longer was he the underdog, but instead expected to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals where Novak Djokovic was waiting.
Unfortunately, that pressure eventually told.
Pat Cash was not happy with Taylor Fritz’s Wimbledon actions
Speaking live on on BBC Sport ahead of Taylor Fritz’s match against Musetti, which he would go on to lose, Pat Cash was actually quite disappointed with the American despite his fine performances to reach the quarter-final stage.
However, his criticism did not come for his tennis, but instead for his off-court antics, specifically related to Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
Having reignited their feud from Roland Garros in 2023, with the Frenchman accusing Fritz of ‘crying’ and being ‘whiny’ before the match, upon comfortably beating him Fritz infamously told him to ‘Have a nice flight home’ at the net.
The tennis world responded to Fritz’s comment at the net to Rinderknech with laughter and shock, but Cash was not so pleased, noting: ‘Yeah that’s not cool, that’s not good. That’s not good, it’s inappropriate and he doesn’t have a lot of mates on this tour, does he?
‘(But) he doesn’t really care, he wants to get out there and does his stuff, he’s not overly friendly but he doesn’t care. You’re not going to get any more mates from saying ‘Have a flight home’ though.’
Let Taylor Fritz unwind every now and then
The only reason that Fritz’s mini outburst has garnered such attention is purely because it was so surprising to see a player so measured and calm act in such a way.
But, realistically, he will have this kind of turmoil bubbling inside of him often when playing against players he might not like, or has a history with.
Letting him occasionally unwind with cheeky and harmless comments such as this one hurts nobody, and actually adds to the sport by unfurling the personalities of these players.
Fritz has grown into one of the sport’s bigger names in recent years with his fine performances and consistency as the men’s American number one, and naturally that pressure is bound to provoke a reaction now and then.
Nick Kyrgios unsurprisingly loved Fritz’s actions, and given how irregular this kind of behaviour is from him, he can be forgiven for one little comment.
