Nick Kyrgios has played just one match in the past two seasons as he prepares for his return to tennis in the new year.

There’s not long left to wait now for fans of the Australian, who have sorely missed seeing him play on the ATP Tour.

Kyrgios last played in June 2023 as he lost to China’s Yibing Wu in a straight-set defeat at the Stuttgart ATP 250 event.

Since then the 29-year-old has struggled with injury, with Kyrgios being told he may never play again after a recent surgery.

He’s battled back since then and has been ramping up preparations for a 2025 season where he will no doubt be looking to return to the top of men’s tennis.

Kyrgios will begin his year at the Brisbane International but has now given further hints as to what his schedule will look like for the rest of the season.

Nick Kyrgios is prepared to play a busy ATP schedule in 2025

Speaking on the Nothing Major podcast, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist revealed which tournaments he plans to play in the new year.

“I am probably going to play [Grand] Slams, Masters events, and maybe a couple of [ATP] 500’s,” he said.

“Everything feels good, the scar is disgusting and is on both sides, but it feels okay.”

Kyrgios then admitted what kind of form he thinks he’ll be in when he makes his return.

“I don’t know if I am going to come back and be playing the way I was playing,” he said.

“I definitely feel there’s a lot of controversial energy which is going to be coming in the next year or two, especially with all this stuff going on at the moment.

“It’s going to be interesting.”

The Australian has been outspoken about doping bans in recent months, and Kyrgios said that he may cause a riot if he plays Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open.

“I just want to go out there and I really want to play [Jannik] Sinner,” he said.

“If I played him in the Australian Open I would just get every single person in the crowd to get on him.

“I would just turn it into an absolute riot, all respect would go out the window and I would just do anything to win.”

Sinner is awaiting the verdict on his doping case, which could see him banned from the sport for a lengthy period.

When was the last time Nick Kyrgios played a ‘full’ ATP schedule?

Having struggled with injury in recent seasons, Kyrgios has barely played on the ATP Tour, but even prior to his health problems, he often played a far shorter schedule than many of his fellow players.

The Australian hasn’t appeared at the French Open in seven years, with the 29-year-old seemingly unbothered by the clay court season.

Nick Kyrgios’ ATP schedule since 2015

Kyrgios has played just one tournament on clay since 2019, as he lost in the 2022 Houston semi-finals to Reilly Opelka.

Never in the past decade has Kyrgios played more than 20 tournaments, a number that is shocking compared to some of the other players on the ATP Tour.

Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, both top-five players, competed in 23 and 24 tournaments this year respectively.

Those numbers are even more impressive considering they often reached the latter stages of events thanks to their impressive performances throughout 2024.

It remains to be seen if Kyrgios will put up those types of numbers in the new year but fans already know the first two tournaments the 29-year-old will take part in.

Kyrgios will play the Brisbane International which begins on December 30, and the Australian Open which gets going on January 12.
