Nick Kyrgios is certainly one of the more outspoken tennis players, with the Australian continuing that trend at the US Open.

Kyrgios wasn’t playing at the 2024 US Open due to injury, but the 2022 Wimbledon finalist was once again involved in Grand Slam media duties.

Many tennis fans loved Kyrgios’ Wimbledon commentary, but the controversial Australian certainly doesn’t always please everyone all the time.

Kyrgios labelled Jannik Sinner’s escaped drugs ban ‘ridiculous’, with the former disappointed the latter was not punished for testing positive for the banned substance clostebol.

Sinner opted not to respond to Kyrgios, with the Italian quickly putting the distraction aside to lift the US Open trophy.

Nick Kyrgios responds when asked if he is good for tennis

The Australian’s compatriot and former doubles world number one Paul McNamee has now issued his thoughts on Kyrgios’ media presence at the US Open, and indeed his ability on the court.

McNamee wrote on X: “My take on Nick Kyrgios’ media roles… his occasional dark humour can certainly offend, but he’s there for one reason… his high-level insights.

“The guy has an underrated tennis brain, if anything too astute for his own good because, as a player, I wonder if he over-relies on it?”

The self-confident Kyrgios offered a blunt response, saying: “I’m good for the game period. On and off the court.”

Will tennis welcome back Nick Kyrgios with open arms?

Kyrgios has friends and enemies in tennis, which is very understandable given his approach to the game on and off the court.

Such a personality is certainly lacking in tennis and indeed in other high-level sports, but whether it is welcomed or not is another matter entirely.

The Australian confirmed during his US Open commentary that he plans to act differently around the world number one after his drugs case ruling, with Kyrgios not going to be as hospitable to Sinner in the locker room.

Having played an exhibition match ahead of the US Open, Kyrgios is seemingly nearing a return to competitive action following a lengthy spell out with injury, with that return certain to come under plenty of scrutiny.

Sinner clearly didn’t let the Australian get to his head, however, with the Italian storming his way to a US Open final win over Taylor Fritz.
