Carlos Alcaraz’s French Open participation is currently up in the air due to his wrist injury.

Alcaraz appeared to suffer an issue with his wrist in his opening match at the Barcelona Open, despite winning.

As concerns grow about Alcaraz’s French Open participation, a big update on his injury has now been revealed.

Just hours after the ceremony concluded, journalist Angel Garcia Muniz reported some inside knowledge he had on Alcaraz to El Partidazo de COPE.

Muniz revealed that inflammation in Alcaraz’s tendon sheath in his wrist was causing him issues, and he has been unable to move it for four days, with the Spaniard awaiting a further scan to confirm the severity of the issue.

“He has inflammation in the tendon sheath,” said Muniz. “The area has been immobilized for the past four days.

“They’re dreaming of Roland Garros, but now that dream seems a bit further away. Everything will depend on what shows up on the ultrasound.”

Alcaraz has five weeks to recover ahead of the French Open, where he is the two-time defending champion.

What did Carlos Alcaraz say about his wrist injury at the Laureus World Sports Awards?

Alcaraz is not playing at the Madrid Open, but he was still in the Spanish capital for the Laureus World Sports Awards.

It was a successful evening for the world number two, with Alcaraz winning the Sportsman of the Year award for the first time.

He was unsurprisingly asked many questions about his injury, with Alcaraz echoing a similar sentiment to the aforementioned report by Muniz.

Alcaraz told Teledeporte, “We’ll have to wait and see. The next test will be crucial, so we’re doing everything we can to make sure it goes well. After the test, we’ll see how the injury is and what steps to take next.”

The 22-year-old also told Eldesmarque, “I can’t say a deadline because in the end, it can be before or after, we don’t know so far. What we can guarantee is that we will do our best to be there as soon as possible.”

While Alcaraz is hoping to be ready for the French Open, he also stated in his press conference that he would not be rushing to comeback for the clay court major if it could risk further injury.

“We have a very long career, many years ahead of us,” said Alcaraz. “Forcing it at this Roland-Garros could harm me a lot for future tournaments. We’ll see what the test shows… I prefer to come back a little later, but very well, rather than come back quickly but badly.

“I have a long career ahead, I’m not afraid to skip what I have to skip. We are clear that this has to recover very well if I don’t want it to harm me in the future.”

Alcaraz’s next scheduled tournament is the Italian Open, where he is the defending champion, but there are just two weeks to go until the the Masters 1000 event in Rome.
