Mirra Andreeva has rapidly become the player to beat on the WTA Tour, having just triumphed at Indian Wells.
Andreeva doesn’t know her favourite surface, with her latest WTA title having come on the hard courts of Indian Wells in California.
She beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final, where Andreeva overcame the Belarusian 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Andreeva has been compared to Carlos Alcaraz, such has been her rapid rise of late, with the 17-year-old now sixth in the world rankings after winning at Indian Wells.
The Russian has risen five spots on the WTA Tour following her win, having also won the Dubai Tennis Championships last month.

Mirra Andreeva was ‘super nervous’ during entire Indian Wells final vs Aryna Sabalenka
But as admitted in her winning press conference, her latest triumph certainly wasn’t straightforward, with Andreeva having been asked how she got to be ‘free and very relaxed’ in the second and third sets after a difficult first set.
“That’s not true,” she replied. “I didn’t feel relaxed. The whole match I felt super nervous. After the first set, I just realized, that, oh, well, what I do now, it doesn’t work, so I have to change something.
“Yeah, in the second set, I tried to play a little bit more aggressive. I didn’t try to overhit her, because I don’t think anyone can overhit Aryna, because she’s a super powerful player.
“I tried to really, I don’t know, create something to make her uncomfortable, and, you know, point by point, game by game, I managed to do that.”
Mirra Andreeva wins back-to-back WTA 1000 titles ahead of Miami Open
Andreeva won in Iasi last year for her maiden WTA title, with the teenager also proving herself to be a very accomplished doubles player.
And she now heads into the Miami Open with a remarkable chance to win three successive WTA 1000 tournaments.
It is certain to be a very difficult task, but having beaten the likes of Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina in the desert, it seems that anything really is possible for the Russian.
Also asked if it feels like it is all happening very fast for her, and if it feels like a long journey, she replied: “I would say that for me it doesn’t really feel like I have been playing for a long time.
| Aryna Sabalenka | Total points | Mirra Andreeva |
| 56.5% (52/92) | Total service points won | 62.2% (51/82) |
| 37.8% (31/82) | Total return points won | 43.5% (40/92) |
| 47.7% (83/174) | Total points won | 52.3% (91/174) |
“Maybe it’s happening fast, but I like it. There is nothing bad that I can say about it. If it’s happening fast, I take it, you know.
“It’s not bad to win two tournaments in a row, so I’m really happy about that. If it’s happening fast, I have no idea if it is, but I’m okay with it. Yes, I take it.”
