Matteo Berrettini believes something needs to change after losing in the second round of the Argentina Open.

Berrettini helped Italy win the Davis Cup for a third consecutive year in his last tournament of the 2025 season.

However, the former Wimbledon finalist was struck with another injury setback that forced Berrettini to withdraw from the Australian Open.

After playing his first tournament of the year at the Argentina Open, Berrettini has called for something to change on the ATP Tour.

Matteo Berrettini requests change to the South American swing

Berrettini won his first match of the year against Federico Coria, but was subsequently beaten in the second round by Vit Kopriva.

This was Berrettini’s first time competing in the South American clay court swing since 2022, and in his post-match press conference he was asked for his views on the tournaments in this part of the world.

There has been some criticism of the ATP’s handling of the South American swing in recent years, having reduced the number of tournaments, and Berrettini appeared to back these complaints.

Praising the atmosphere in Buenos Aires, Berrettini called for South America to have an even more significant swing than it currently does.

“Argentina needs to have tournaments. South America deserves to have a major tour,” said Berrettini. “The South American tour is alive: last night the stands were full.”

Berrettini will look to continue embracing the South American swing, as he is now set to compete in Rio de Janeiro, before playing in Santiago.

What has Joao Fonseca said about the South American swing

Andy Murray has previously called for South America to have a Masters 1000 tournament, but that does not appear likely to be happening anytime soon.

Instead, there will be an ATP 1000 tournament in Saudi Arabia starting from 2028, which has divided opinion across the board.

Brazilian superstar Joao Fonseca was also asked about the current South American swing, but he did not appear to want to get involved in the debate.

“It’s only my second year playing ATP. A lot of players talk about it,” said Fonseca. “It’s something that’s going to happen in 2028. Obviously I really like playing here and playing in Rio, in South America. I don’t have much of an opinion. I’m still a rookie.”

Where do you think Joao Fonseca will be ranked at the end of the 2026 season?

Fonseca was beaten by Alejandro Tabilo in his only match at the Argentina Open, and he will now head back to Brazil for the Rio Open.

There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the South American swing at the moment, but it still remains the same on the 2027 ATP calendar.
