Mats Wilander pointed out just one question mark from Jannik Sinner’s run to the US Open title.
The World number one has endured a difficult few weeks off court but he has flourished on court after backing up his Cincinnati Open title win with victory at Flushing Meadows.
Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to triumph in New York and become the first Italian man to win the US Open.
After claiming his second grand Slam title Sinner has extended his lead at the top of the ATP rankings and is heading into the final few months of the year aiming to finish this season on a high.
What did Mats Wilander say about Jannik Sinner’s US Open title run?
Jannik Sinner was one of the favourites to claim the US Open title along with Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
But he became the overwhelming favourite after the Olympic champion and French Open and Wimbledon winner suffered shock early exits.
The pressure and expectation did not overwhelm Sinner as he grew in confidence throughout the tournament. But he did not start well straightaway, as Mats Wilander pointed out while reflecting on the Italian’s run to the title.
“It’s just been a solid two weeks. His first match against Mackenzie McDonald was the only question mark we had,” Wilander told Eurosport. “I think he knew this was going to happen if he kept doing what we knew he could do.
“He can play any opponent on any surface, and we think Jannik Sinner is the favourite at the moment at this stage of his career and he is only going to get better.”

Who did Jannik Sinner beat to win the US Open title?
Sinner began his 2024 US Open campaign by losing the first set to America’s Mackenzie McDonald.
But he recovered to claim a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 win and progress to round two where he began to hit his stride.
Straight sets victories over Alex Michelsen, Christopher O’Connell and Tommy Paul followed, before Sinner avenged his Wimbledon loss to Daniil Medvedev with a four-set win in the quarter-finals.
Sinner outlasted Britain’s Jack Draper in the semi-finals, before overpowering Fritz in front of his home crowd to secure US Open glory.
