Madison Keys won her first Grand Slam title earlier this year at the Australian Open.
Keys beat Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek in back-to-back matches to win the Australian Open title.
The American appeared to be a very popular winner, with Keys receiving messages from Coco Gauff and many other fellow tennis stars.
This is the biggest moment of Keys’ career so far, but she has now suggested that hard courts are not her favorite surface.

Madison Keys says that grass courts are her favorite surface
Despite reaching her only two Grand Slam finals on hard courts, Keys has admitted that grass is actually her favorite surface.
In an interview with the LTA, Keys explained why she thinks that her game is naturally suited to grass.
“I’ve always loved playing on the grass,” said Keys. “I kind of started later in my career, I don’t think I played on grass until I was like 16, and I just immediately loved it and I decided it was my favourite surface.
“I just feel like I kind of have a pretty natural game for grass and I’ve always felt pretty comfortable moving on it, so I have always really embraced it and loved playing there and have obviously a lot of really great memories.”
Keys will be part of the WTA Tour’s return to Queen’s Club this year, with Naomi Osaka, Jessica Pegula and Emma Raducanu also signed up.
What is Madison Keys’ best performing surface?
Keys’ claim about grass being her favorite surface is actually supported by her career results, as she has a better win percentage on it compared to hard and clay courts.
The world number five won her third grass court title last year in Eastbourne, the same tournament where she lifted her first WTA trophy in 2014.
Despite having an impressive record on grass, Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament where Keys has not reached at least the semi-finals.
Keys suffered Wimbledon heartbreak in 2024, after being forced to retire from her fourth round match against Jasmine Paolini due to a hamstring injury.
| Madison Keys | Hard | Clay | Grass |
| Career Win-loss Record | 206-130 (61%) | 83-47 (64%) | 48-16 (75%) |
| Titles Won | 5 | 2 | 3 |

Since Keys made her WTA debut at 14-years-old, she has proved herself as an all-court player.
This includes on clay courts, with Keys reaching the Madrid Open quarter-finals in just this past week.
