Madison Keys already achieves feat for the first time in seven years despite only playing four tournaments so far in 2025

Madison Keys continued her impressive start to the 2025 season at Indian Wells after reaching the semi-finals.

Keys made history at Indian Wells, before achieving her best result in the Californian desert by reaching the semi-finals.

After winning 16 consecutive matches dating back to the Adelaide International, Keys’ run was ended by Aryna Sabalenka, who got revenge from the Australian Open final in emphatic fashion.

Despite no longer having her winning streak, Keys is at a career-high ranking and has already achieved something by the end of March that she had not done since 2018.

Madison Keys achieves ranking feat for the first time in seven years

Keys won the Australian Open back in January, and elected to skip tournaments in February before returning for Indian Wells.

The American has only played four tournaments so far in 2025, but has already amassed more ranking points than she did throughout the entirety of the past six seasons.

Having earnt 2,944 ranking points already this year, with nearly two thirds of that coming from her Australian Open win, Keys is now bidding to earn her most ranking points in a calendar year.

Keys last earned more ranking points in a calendar year in 2018, but needs to win just one match at the Miami Open to surpass that total as well.

The most prolific season of her career so far came in 2016 (4,137 points), with Keys trailing that total by 1,193 points in March.

Is Madison Keys likely to qualify for the WTA Finals in 2025?

After winning the Australian Open, the year-end WTA Finals are likely to be a big goal of Keys’ for the rest of the season.

Despite reaching the US Open final in 2017, the only time that Keys has played the WTA Finals is in that aforementioned 2016 season.

Keys was unable to make much of an impression on the year-end tournament that was then held in Singapore, as she won only one of her three matches and was knocked out at the round-robin stage.

She acted as an alternate in 2022, but it now seems likely that Keys will officially return to the WTA Finals in Riyadh later this year.

Keys currently leads the WTA race on 2,944 points, and there is also a reserved spot for one Grand Slam champion from the season that is in the top 20.

Indian Wells champion Mirra Andreeva is also towards the top, alongside Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, before a significant gap down to Elena Rybakina in fifth spot.

Notable admissions from the top eight at the moment include top 10 players Coco Gauff (12), Jasmine Paolini (27) and Qinwen Zheng (56).

Keys will look to extend her gap at the top of the WTA race at the Miami Open, where she achieved her best result in that 2016 season by reaching the quarter-finals.

The world number five will begin her campaign against either Elina Avanesyan or the sister of Mirra Andreeva, Erika.
