Mirra Andreeva and Erika Andreeva will both be relieved after their Wuhan Open match came to an end.

Mirra said it was a ‘nightmare’ to face Erika, with the two sisters having met for the first time in a WTA match at the Wuhan Open.

They became the first pair sisters to take each other on in such an event since Serena and Venus Williams in 2020.

And Mirra was impressing at the Wuhan Open, with the 17-year-old having won her 11th WTA-1000 match of the season in round one.

But she came crashing back down to earth against her elder sister Erika, with the 20-year-old beating Mirra 6-3, 6-1.

Erika Andreeva admits mistake despite Wuhan Open win vs sister Mirra

It took the former just 90 minutes to secure the straight sets victory, although she has admitted it certainly wasn’t as easy as the scoreline suggests.

As quoted by the WTA website, Erika said: “It was tough for both of us. First experience, and both of us were happy it happened at a big tournament. But I’m not sure we enjoyed it.”

And speaking of knowing a lot about what Mirra may do on the court, she said: “It’s true, because we played each other in childhood a lot. I know where she will most possibly go, and she as well.

“Sometimes during the rally I was like, ‘Normally I go there, but I know that she knows that I go there,’ and I changed my decision. I’m not sure that was the best choice sometimes.”

Erika undoubtedly used her three years of experience over her younger sister to grind out the win in Wuhan.

Mirra will definitely bounce back from the defeat as she aims to continue her rapid rise, having just broken the WTA top 20.

It is the first time the teenager has achieved the feat, rising to 19th in the rankings after reaching the China Open quarter-finals.

Erika meanwhile can be extremely proud of the victory, which besides bragging rights also involved a second career top 20 win.

The world number 70 clinched her first such success against American star Danielle Collins in Monterrey in August.
