Lorenzo Musetti has been unable to recover from the injury he sustained at the Australian Open.

Musetti retired in his Australian Open quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic, despite being two sets to one up.

Due to the sudden nature of his retirement from the match, there were some questions about Musetti’s attitude.

However, Musetti has since withdrawn from clay court tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, and he has now been forced to pull out of another event.

Lorenzo Musetti withdraws from the Mexican Open

Musetti felt pain in the upper region of his right leg in his quarterfinal match against Djokovic, which many have suspected is a torn adductor.

As a result, Musetti has been unable to continue his impressive start to the 2026 season, and instead has been forced to withdraw from three ATP tournaments.

The latest of those is the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, where Musetti would have been the second seed before announcing his withdrawal.

In a statement confirming this on Instagram, Musetti explained that recent tests have revealed that he is not ready to return to the match court just yet.

Musetti wrote, “Hi everyone, I wanted to share an update: I just had a new medical evaluation and need to continue my rehabilitation before I can return to the court.

“Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to participate in the Acapulco tournament. Thank you all for your continued support—I can’t wait to be back competing!”

How many ranking points will Lorenzo Musetti lose due to his injury?

Fortunately for Musetti, he has actually not lost any points in his absence, and remains as the world number five in the latest update of the ATP rankings.

However, if Musetti is unable to return soon then he could face some huge setbacks in terms of his ranking.

After withdrawing from the Mexican Open, Musetti’s next two tournaments are at Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

Musetti only won three matches at these two tournaments last year, and therefore has just 150 points to defend from these two tournaments.

Who is the best ATP player never to win a Grand Slam title?

Is it Alexander Zverev, Marcelo Rios, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer or maybe even someone else?

However, the real danger to Musetti would be if he does not recover in time for the clay court swing, where he collected most of his ranking points last year.

In total, Musetti has a huge 2,250 ranking points to defend during the clay court season, which currently accounts for 51% of his current ranking total.

The 23-year-old now has just over two weeks to prepare for Indian Wells, which gets underway on March 4.
