Lorenzo Musetti is officially enjoying his off-season from tennis, but remains uniquely involved within the sport.
After all, the Italian has clearly not switched off from his sport, having given a lengthy interview recently to share his views on the current state of men’s tennis.
Naturally, reviewing such a topic cannot come without a discussion about Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who have been the dominant force on the ATP Tour for two years now.
Their duopoly over almost every elite-level title is incredible, but for some, it has become monotonous. Some have even questioned Alcaraz and Sinner’s friendly relationship, given how fiercely they compete against one another.
They are waiting on the next big star to emerge and unsettle their stranglehold, and Lorenzo Musetti has now shared how far away he feels from being that player.

Speaking to Italian Eurosport, he offered his views on Alcaraz and Sinner, admitting: “Well, definitely this year I’ve made some progress to get closer.”
Musetti continued: “It’s at their level that right now, I have to say the truth is that Carlos has been a step above everyone else for years. And I think it’s well deserved, I mean, they prove it every time, that’s their strength, the beautiful thing about their rivalry is that they’re two completely opposite players.”
He then turned his attention to Sinner, likening him to Novak Djokovic: “Jannik is truly perhaps a Djokovic 2.0; he’s a bit of a reincarnation of a more modern Novak. He hits harder and perhaps even more aggressively. And it’s very reminiscent of Djokovic’s moves.”
Musetti concluded by pointing out the difference between the top-two-ranked players on the ATP Tour, adding: “Sinner has shown that it is very difficult, not to say impossible, for him to lose a game against a rival inferior to him, but to Alcaraz, sometimes, it happens, as it happened to him in the first round of Paris, where he fell against Cameron Norrie, something that was unexpected.

“And, in my opinion, that’s the beauty of their rivalry. But let’s also hope we get closer.”
Jannik Sinner could surpass Novak Djokovic
At his peak, Djokovic was a truly unstoppable force, capable of beating anyone on any given day.
He used to carve through tournaments with ease, strolling to the title and adding to his sprawling trophy cabinet.
However, whilst Sinner might not quite be at the level of a prime Djokovic, the key difference between the two is their respective competition.
At the moment, it’s clear that nobody can compete with the Italian’s brutal, relentless hitting of the ball. Scarily, he’s only getting better, too.
In 2025, he lost to just three people all season, with Alcaraz the only persistent issue for him.
To compare that with Djokovic at his best, and he had Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, as well as other capable stars like Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, Marin Cilic and more.
Sinner is so far away from matching the many, many records set by the 38-year-old and will likely not break them anytime soon.
However, if the field stays as far below him and Alcaraz as they currently are, this duo could sweep up honour after honour and surpass Djokovic in no time at all.
