Nick Kyrgios made his return to the ATP Tour at the Brisbane International after nearly 18 months out of action.
Kyrgios played doubles with Novak Djokovic in Brisbane, alongside the singles tournament where he lost in the first round to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
It was at this tournament in Brisbane where Kyrgios obtained an abdominal injury, alongside a flare up of his wrist that he had previously undergone surgery on.
Despite this issue the Australian went onto compete at the Australian Open, where Kyrgios lost to Jacob Fearnley in the first round of singles.
Kyrgios also played in doubles competition with Thanasi Kokkinakis, who was also struggling with injury, leading to the pair retiring from their only match in Melbourne.
The former Australian Open doubles champions were expected to reunite for the Davis Cup in Stockholm, but that will no longer be happening after Lleyton Hewitt provided an update on Kyrgios.

Lleyton Hewitt says Nick Kyrgios will miss Davis Cup due to injury
Kyrgios had not played the Davis Cup since 2019, but had been announced as part of Australia’s team for their upcoming qualifier against Sweden.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist was set to head to the Swedish capital alongside Alex de Minaur, Kokkinakis, Matthew Ebden and John Peers, with Hewitt as captain.
Kyrgios was criticized for comments about Hewitt’s son recently, and now the Australian Davis Cup captain has confirmed that he will not be joining them in Stockholm.
“Nick won’t be coming here. He’s suffered a couple of injuries through the Australian summer,” Hewitt told Tennis Australia.
“I was excited about the potential for him to be back in the Davis Cup team, but it wasn’t to be. Obviously, he’s very underdone with his body, so it’s not surprising he’s picked up an injury trying to play five-set tennis straight away without many matches. Hopefully, fingers crossed, we get through, and he may be an option.”
As a result of his withdrawal, Kyrgios has been replaced by Aleksandar Vukic, who reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time at the 2025 tournament.
What is next for Nick Kyrgios?
Kyrgios does not expect to play singles after 2025, at least at a high level, after admitting that his future is unclear following the Australian Open.
The 29-year-old is not currently entered into any upcoming ATP tournaments, but Kyrgios is scheduled to play a different format of tennis in the coming weeks.
Kyrgios will play at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) Guadalajara event in February, that is ran by Patrick Mouratoglou, who is also the current coach of Naomi Osaka.
This is not the first time that Kyrgios has signed up to play unique tennis format, having also played at the UTS event in New York last year.
While it is not currently clear what will come for him after that, but Kyrgios is eyeing a return to Wimbledon.
